BACKBLAST. The code name used by G.I. Joe team anti-aircraft soldier, U.S. Army Sergeant Edward J. Menninger. Backblast was born in New York city. He is an expert in using various portable ground-to-air missle launchers. On his first mission with the G.I. Joe team, Backblast was part of the covert team sent into Sierra Gordo to rescue captured members of the G.I. Joe team and the USSR's October Guard. He shot down a Cobra Condor jet attempting to destroy the Joes' vehicle before the team could get across the border into the friendly nation of Punta del Mucosa. Backblast was in G.I. Joe headquarters when Clutch and Rock & Roll nearly went berserk after being brain-washed by Cobra. He was one of the many Joes involved in the conflict in the Middle Eastern nation of Benzheen. Backblast served with G.I. Joe until its shut down in 1994. He was later called back to join the reinstated Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. After the Joe team stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Backblast, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. (GI 92, 100, 115; GIv2 24; Figures: 1, 2, 3, 4)

BACK STOP. The code name used by G.I. Joe team member Robert A. Levin. Born in Montreal, Quebec in Canada,  Back Stop operated the team's laser tank, the Persuader. On his first mission, Back Stop was part of a team sent to Frusenland to provide security for the U.S. military research team, Battle Force 2000. During the mission, the team was attacked by Cobra forces who had allied themselves with the government of Frusenland. Back Stop and the other Joes were being affected by Cobra's "paranoia waves," and were nearly defeated, if not for the intervention of the very team they were sent to protect, Battle Force 2000. Back Stop only served on the team for a few missions. Today, like many former Joes, Back Stop is a reserve member if the current Joe team. (GI 68; Figure: 1)

BAILEY, MR. A teacher at a Redding, California elementary school attended by Julius Taber, one of the young Serpentor clones. Bailey left the child at recess for a moment and found the boy missing when he came back outside. Julius had been taken away by his older "brother" Hannibal. (GIv2 16)

BARBECUE. The codename used by U.S. Army Sergeant Gabriel A. Kelly. Known as a "party animal" since he was young, Barbecue comes from a long line of firefighters serving the Boston Fire Department. He decided to bring his knowledge of firefighting to the Army and was assigned to the G.I. Joe team.

In his first mission for the Joe team, Barbecue was part of the group of Joes that defended the Joe air-sea base from Cobra hydrofoil attack. He later joined the Joes in the ground battle shortly afterward on Cobra Island. Soon after, he was onboard the G.I. Joe hovercraft during the rescue of Ripcord and Snake-Eyes off the coast of Cobra Island. He was in the G.I. Joe team's headquarters (the Pit) when it was infiltrated by the Cobra agent known as Zartan. He later joined the strike team that attacked the Cobra-controlled town of Springfield. During a training session in the Pit, Barbecue was injured by the Cobra ninja Storm Shadow and then was nearly punched out by Scarlett after insensitively misunderstanding why Snake-Eyes let Storm Shadow leave the Pit unharmed. Barbecue was one of the few Joes who did not take part in the Cobra Island civil war. When Hawk and the Joes who took part in that mission were unjustly arrested, Barbecue and the others who had not been there went into hiding and planned to rescue Hawk from St. Lo's Infirmary where he and General Hollingsworth were being held. The Joes eventually cleared Hawk's name and uncovered the corruption of U.S. Army General Malthus. For a short period of time, Barbecue was assigned to the Eco-Warriors. He later used his flame-projector to defend the Pit against a Cobra invasion. His subsequent missions up to the team's shutdown in 1994 are classified. When the team was reinstated in 2001, Barbecue signed on as a reserve member. He eventually joined the team in New York, where he assisted in clean-up and rescue operations after Cobra detonated a bomb in a television studio where Hawk was appearing on the television show, "Twenty Questions." After the Joe team stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Barbecue, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. Larry Hama named Barbecue "Gabriel Kelly" after the father of a friend. (GI 40, 41, 47, 48, 49, 50, 52, 78, 130; YB 2; OB 1; GIv2 29; BF 1; Figures: 1, 2, 3)

BARONESS

BARREL ROLL. The code name used by U.S. Army Corporal Dwight E. Stall. Growing up in Cincinnati, Barrel Roll seemed to be practicing to become a sniper all of the time. He could keep motionless for such long periods of time that teachers would think he was sleeping with his eyes closed. Still, he was a very bright student and a whiz at math. After enlisting in the Army, Barrel Roll became a sniper, and was skilled enough at it to be a marksmanship instructor. He is also a trained pilot. He combined these to skills, using a small, air assault hang glider dropped from a plane to silently reach his destination. Once in a suitable position he lands and stays there motionless waiting to take his shot. Barrel Roll joined the G.I. Joe team after its reinstatement, as one of the team's many "greenshirt" recruits. He was finally granted full status as a Joe shortly after the team's battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor.

Barrel Roll's first mission was to infiltrate Cobra Island, posing as a glider-flying Cobra Raptor-Viper. Once inside Cobra's headquarters, he broke into their computers to give the Joes secret access to their system. He narrowly escaped a number of Cobra troopers and Tomax and Xamot. Dr. Mindbender, in hiding on the island, tried to force Barrel Roll to take him along as the Joe escaped in a jet-ski. He tricked the Doctor, and left without him. He was extracted by the Joes as he evaded capture by Cobra's navy. Barrel Roll's brother, Thomas, was also one of the team's greenshirts but did not fair well on the team. During a disastrous mission into the Cobra-infiltrated town of New Moon, Colorado, team leader Mirage considered Thomas to be a poor soldier, and he was soon charged with negligence that led to the deaths of two greenshirts and would even possibly be charged with treason. Despite Barrel Roll's speaking on his brother's behalf, military judges went ahead with plans to address the charges in a court martial. Thomas angrily told his brother he didn't need his help as he was taken away by MPs to await trial. (GIv2 28-30, 36, 37, 39, 40; SM:M; Figures: 1, 2, 3)

BAZOOKA. The code name used by G.I. Joe team's missle specialist, U.S. Army Sergeant David L. Katzenbogen. Born in Hibbing, Minnesota, Bazooka joined the Army and drove a tank in the Third Armored Division before realizing that an illiterate farmer with a $200 rocket launcher could destroy a tank with little training. He transferred immediately and began learning about various armor defeating weapons systems.

Bazooka joined the G.I. Joe team in 1985. During thier final training mission as provisional members of the G.I. Joe team, Airtight, Bazooka, Crankcase and Heavy Metal were testing out new vehicles in the desert near Las Vegas, Nevada led by Lady Jaye. On the highway on the way back from a lunch break, the group was attacked by Cobra B.A.T.s (Battle Android Troopers) carrying creeper vines and sleeping gas created by Cobra agent Dr. Mindbender, who was demonstrating them to Destro and the Baroness. The Joes were kidnapped and forced into battling the B.A.T.s in a junkyard. The Joes figured out how to defeat the vines and destroyed Mindbender's factory, forcing the three Cobras into retreat. Over the next several years, Bazooka was a part of many important operations, including the rescue of Ripcord and Snake-Eyes from Cobra Island and the invasion of the Cobra-controlled town of Springfield. He was also one of the many Joes to be involved in the contruction of the third Pit headquarters in Utah. For a time, he was also part of the short-lived special unit, Tiger Force. Bazooka was one of the few members of the team who did not participate in the Cobra Island civil war. When most of the team was arrested after that war, Bazooka and several other Joes went "underground". The group staged an assalt on St. Lo's Infirmary in Virginia where corrupt governement agents had arrested falsely-accused Generals Hawk ad Hollingsworth. Bazooka was injured during the assault, but the Joes were successful and Bazooka recovered soon after. Bazooka continued to serve with the team until it was disbanded in 1994. He later left the Army and began working as a security guard. In 2001, Bazooka was invited to join the reinstated G.I. Joe team. Unfortunately, he hadn't stayed in shape and didn't meet the health requirements. Bazooka began working out and got himself back into shape. He met up with other former team members to reminisce, but the Joes stumbled upon a hidden cell of Cobras in a small town. As the Joes escaped Cobra agents, Bazooka fought and beat Big Boa. In the wake of that fight, Bazooka has returned to the Joe team. He was one of the many Joes to take part in the battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. After the Joe team stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Bazooka, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. (GI 44, 46, 47, 49, 50, 63, 64, 67, 78, 90, 100; OB 1; SM 27; GIv2 1, 2, 14, 15, 23, 24; BF 1; Figures: 1, 2, 3) Bazooka wears a New England Patriots football jersey bearing the number of former player Steve Grogan. His Tiger Force jersey colors resemble the colors of the Miami Dolphins.

BEACH HEAD

BEUKE, AGENT ANTHONY. An FBI agent who was among the reinstated G.I. Joe team's new recruits in 2001. Beuke, using the code name "Sneak-Peek" (previously used by a late member of the original team), infiltrated Zartan's Dreadnok organization and made his way into its Chicago base. He was shot and killed while spying on a new, advanced Cobra B.A.T. (GIv2 2, 4, 10, 11)

BIG BEN. The code name used by David J. Bennett, a Staff Sergeant with the British Special Air Service (SAS) -- one of Britain's most elite fighting forces. He was born in Burford, England, and in addition to his SAS training he served with NATO Long-Range Recon Patrol in West Germany.

In 1991, Big Ben was assigned temporarily to America's G.I. Joe team. He first joined the Joes in Scotland, where a small team kept watch over Castle Destro. Cobra Commander soon attacked his old rival and the Joes fought on Destro's side during the battle. Knowing that the Commander continued to hold a grudge against Destro, Big Ben and a team of Joes helped defend the weapons designer's castle in Trans-Carpathia. They fought Cobra throughout the remote nation's mountains. A short time later, Hawk was injured and trapped in Borovia along with Lady Jaye. Against orders, Stalker took the Battle Wagon into the Borovian capital to rescue their commander. Big Ben was one of the Joes who joined him. Ben later assisted the Joes in guarding and testing a new secret weapon, the rail-gun prototype. Cobra eventually attacked, and the Joes fought them off. He continued to serve on occasional missions with the team up until it's shut down in 1994. He was later called back to join the reinstated Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. The forces loyal to Serpentor, known as the Coil, had invaded a number of countries leading up to the battle and Big Ben later joined the Joes in dealing with Coil troops in other parts of the world. (GI 116, 117, 120, 121, 122, 123, 128, 129, 137; GIv2 24, 26; Figures: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

BIG BOA. The man known as Big Boa comes from a long line of prizefighters. His father was an Army boxing champion and when he came back from Vietnam, he introduced his four-year-old son to the boxing ring. By age sixteen, Big Boa was on his way to a successful boxing career, but began staging illegal bare-knuckle "tough man" competitions. Hoping to force his son to straighten out his life, Big Boa's father sent him to military school, but he only became the school bully and was thrown out for everything from insubordination to fighting. He began his illegal competitions once again and traveled to stage them in various towns. Big Boa eventually made his way to Cobra, becoming a trainer for the organization's troops. His loyalty to Cobra Commander has led to the theory that he owes some debt to him. He worked mostly in the background for years before Cobra was scattered in the 1990s. When the Commander rebuilt his organization in 2001, Big Boa returned to train the new troops. While in Cobra's town of Delhi Hills, Big Boa fought a group of Joes who were trying to escape custody. He fought the Joe named Bazooka with his bare hands, but was beaten and the Joes escaped. He was later involved in Cobra's battle against Serpentor's forces on Cobra Island. Some time later, Big Boa had been working with Cobra in Brazil when a team of Joes discovered he had been killed by an unknown assassin. It was later revealed that he was one of several Cobra and G.I. Joe members murdered by the Red Shadows. (OB 2; GIv2 15, 24, 38 (died), 42 (photo); Figures: 1)

BIGGLES-JONES, DR. SIDNEY. The scientist who developed the experimental weapon known as the Rail Gun prototype -- actually the first of two. Despite her young age, Biggles-Jones was one of the leading scientists in her field. She and the Rail Gun were captured by Cobra from her laboratory in New Jersey. Cobra Commander offered her a place in Cobra, along with Scarlett (who was pretending she gave up on the Joe team). She then particpated in a mission with Cobra to destroy the second Rail Gun prototype, which was being guarded by the G.I. Joe team. She continued to work for Cobra for some time, developing other versions of the Rail Gun. She was with Cobra during their involvement with the Transformer known as Megatron. Biggles-Jones even helped repair Megatron and provided him with a new body. Soon after, Cobra and Megatron joined forces against the Joes in the Cobra-subjugated town of Millville. During the fight, Megatron decided he can use Biggles-Jones scientific knowledge. She eventually surrendered herself to Megatron in order to save the Joes, Cobra and the entire town from his rampage. Megatron and the scientist headed for space in the spacecraft known as The Ark, but Biggles-Jones was saved due to the efforts of the Joes and the heroic Transformers, the Autobots. Biggles-Jones had little or no contact with the Joe team for years until the reinstated Joe team raided what turned out to be a Cobra medical facility. One of the bedridden patients under medical care alongside known Cobra operatives was Dr. Biggles-Jones. The military is investigating each patient's status and why they were placed in that facility. (GI 135-142; Transformers: Generation 2 #2; SM:A)

BIG TEP.  A bandit chief in a small country in Southeast Asia. He was also a known criminal involved in smuggling and extortion, among other things. Big Tep started a revolt against the rule of General Lom, the country's communist dictator. He tended to frighten farmers and villagers into supporting him. He eventually became a real threat to Lom thanks to Destro, who sold him weapons and vehicles, as well as a small group of advisors from his army of Iron Grenadiers. General Lom was given assistance by the Soviets' October Guard to stop Big Tep's uprising.

Members of the Joe team -- Chuckles, Scarlett, Iceberg and Snake-Eyes -- got involved in the struggle when Snake-Eyes stopped some of Big Tep's bandits from beating up an old farmer. The bandits who survived their first encounter with the Joes exaggerated their numbers and brought a small army of bandits and Iron Grenadiers to the old man's farm to stop them. They were met there by the October Guard. The Iron Grenadiers chased off the Soviets, leaving Big Tep and his men to find the Joes, who were hidden in the farmer's house. When Big Tep threatened to kill the old farmer, the Joes came out of hiding and easily dealt with the bandits. Big Tep was killed, and his revolution presumably died with him. (SM 18)

BLIND MASTER. The man who would become the Blind Master was once an aimless veteran living in Japan. He was eventually taken in by the Hard Master of Arashikage ninja clan. He was taken into their home and learned the ancient art of ninjitsu. Years later, he was involved in some sort of accident which robbed him of his sight. He eventually became a ninja master and was considered an honorary member of the clan.

The G.I. Joe team encountered the Blind Master in 1987. He was running a martial arts school in Denver, Colorado, which was next to the garage owned by Fred VII, an undercover Cobra Crimson Guardsman. It is not known if "sensei Moore" set up his school there by coincidence or design. When Cobra Commander and his son Billy were staying with Fred, Billy stumbled upon one of Blind Master's classes. What he saw brought back a flood of memories, helping him recall his ninja training under Storm Shadow, which he had forgotten after months in a coma. Billy learned that the Blind Master's assistant, Jinx, was another member of the Arashikage clan, and reported to the G.I. Joe team. Soon after Billy arrived, the Blind Master left his training to Jinx and headed off on a secret mission. The mission brought him to Grenada, where he posed as a tourist. There, he met with Snake-Eyes and Scarlett, who were vacationing there with Flint and Lady Jaye. With the Blind Master's assistance, Scarlett and Snake-Eyes faked their own deaths. Their goal was to sneak off on a mission into Borovia to rescue Stalker, Snow Job and Quick Kick, three Joes who were thrown into a Borovian gulag. The Defense Department had ordered that no rescue attempt would be made. Snake-Eyes, Scarlett and the Blind Master made their way through Europe to sneak into Borovia. On the way, they had to evade local thieves and soon joined a traveling circus. The circus owner had never seen a blind man juggle chainsaws (nor had anyone else). The group was joined by Jinx, Storm Shadow and Billy before they staged an assault on the gulag and freed the Joes and the other prisoners. After returning home to the United States, the Blind Master went into semi-retirement in San Francisco. There, he became mentor to a young thief named Tyrone, eventually instructing the boy in ninjitsu. The Blind Master spent years there before he encountered Zartan when the Cobra operative snuck into the Presidio. The Blind Master hoped to exact his vengeance on Zartan for killing his mentor, the Hard Master. Though he was blind, the master nearly bested Zartan in a brutal fight in an alleyway. Eventually, Zartan stabbed the ninja master. As the Blind Master lay dying he told Zartan that Onihashi - the swordsmith who brought Zartan into the clan - had forgiven Zartan before committing suicide ashamed of his apprentice's betrayal. Zartan couldn't believe that anyone could forgive him for what he did, and told the Blind Master that he had lived with guilt over Onihashi's death for all these years. But Zartan could do nothing but watch another man die at his hands. He vowed to change his ways, and used his mastery of disguise to pose as the Blind Master and become mentor to Tyrone. A short time later, Zartan revealed his true identity and abandoned the guise of the ninja master. The Blind Master is remembered as a friend to the G.I. Joe team. His legacy continued when one of his former students became a member of the G.I. Joe Ninja Force, and later helped establish a martial arts school for underpriviledged children. BLOWTORCH. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant and Joe team flamethrower, Timothy P. Hanrahan. Ever since he was a child growing up in Tampa, Florida, Blowtorch was fascinated by firefighting and fire safety. He became disgusted by cigarette smoke and is always concerned about escape routes wherever he goes. Some consider him to be paranoid, but he bases his feelings on an intimate knowledge of fire. Learning to control fire and harness its power was Blowtorch's interest when learning all about various incendiary weapons. In general, Blowtorch is wary of unnecessarily risky or dangerous situations.

Blowtorch was one of the new members assigned to the G.I. Joe team after many of the original members of the team were taken off active duty. He first arrived at the Pit shortly before the celebration dedicating the rebuilt Joe headquarters. Blowtorch and Ripcord were taking an injured Spirit to buy natural healing remedies at the Staten Island Mall when they stumbled upon Cobra Crimson Guardsman Fred II and his family. A firefight and car chase followed, during which the Joes borrowed the delivery van owned by Candy, a woman in the guise of Bongo the Balloon Bear. The Cobras made their escape, but the Joes arrived back at the Pit with a van full of party balloons just in time for the Pit's re-dedication. In appreciation for "Bongo's" assistance, Blowtorch, Ripcord and Gung-Ho helped Candy deliver a van load of balloons to the Arbco Brothers Circus. Again, the Joes stumbled upon the Crimson Guard, but this time their were dozens of them, including the Crimson Guard commanders, Tomax and Xamot. While riding a roller-coaster, Gung-Ho and Blowtorch were fired on from below by the Cobras. When their car came to a stop, the two Joes appeared to be dead, but it was only a trick to lure the Cobras in so the Joes could get the drop on them. In the firefight that ensued, the Crimson Guardsmen were defeated, though Tomax and Xamot escaped. Following a lead on where the twin brothers had gone, a team of Joes including Blowtorch raided a house in Staten Island. They discovered Crimson Guard uniforms and equipment inside after a group of Cobra agenst escaped. The house was nearly in ruins, and Blowtorch was surprised to see Candy arrive. The house had been hers and her father's, though Candy had no idea of his involvement in Cobra. Some time later, Blowtorch helped secure the Pit when it was infiltrated by Cobra's master of disguise, Zartan, and soon after was one of the many Joes who participated in the invasion of the Cobra-controlled town of Springfield. Blowtorch would be involved in another massive operation against Cobra when the Joe team fought in the Cobra Island civil war. Blowtorch continued to serve the Joe team for years. Many of his subsequent missions remain classified, but he served the Joes until the team was shut down in 1994. Some time later, Blowtorch returned home to Tampa, and helped begin a fire safety education program for inner city schools. His efforts proved very successful and he received commendations from the mayor of Tampa. After the team was reinstated years later, Blowtorch rejoined and played a role in the Joes' fight against the terrorist Tyler Wingfield. He was later one of the many Joes to take part in the battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. After the Joe team stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Blowtorch, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. BORIS. A prisoner in the same Borovian gulag where Stalker, Quick Kick and Snow Job were held for months. Boris was known to inform on his fellow prisoners, having been promised his life be spared. Due to his long stay in the gulag, Boris was pale and sickly. Boris' snitching got Snow Job badly beaten by the Borovian guards. Ironicaly, it was Boris' willingness to inform that got him killed. When a rescue attempt was made to free the Joes, the guards asked who planned the attack. Fearing for his life, Boris lied and told them it was Snow Job. The guards saw through the lie because Snow Job was too sick to even stand up. Boris was then blamed for the attack and beaten to death by the guards. (SM 63, 66)

BREKHOV, COLONEL. Ivan Nikolevich Brekhov was born in Odessa in the Ukraine and grew up on his parents' farm.  Brekhov's father fought the Nazis at Stalingrad, and young Ivan followed his father's footsteps into the military and would spend most of his life serving the USSR. By the time he was chosen to command the October Guard, Brekhov was a tough, cigar-chomping veteran with a sharp strategic mind. The Guard was Soviet equivalent of the G.I. Joe team (though the Colonel maintained the Joe team was the American equivalent of the October Guard), and over the latter years of the Cold War, the October Guard came up against both Cobra and the G.I. Joe team. Cobra often played the two teams against each other, but the Joes and the Guard occasionally teamed up to defeat their common enemy. Brekhov was pragmatic enough to agree to these brief alliances to achieve his mission objectives.. He was never one to spout communist party rhetoric, and often had a cynical sense of humor towards Soviet politics. While he constantly maintained strict leadership of his team, he nonetheless considered those under his command his friends. The final mission of the original October Guard began when the Russians arrived in Sierra Gordo to assist the revolutionary leader, El Jefe, in his fight to overthrow the local government. The Soviet government hoped to make Sierra Gordo communist territory. The nation's current government was being supported by Cobra and Destro's Iron Grenadiers. All during the mission, a small group of Joes spied on both sides. During the fighting, Colonel Brekhov was moved by the small nation's revolution, having long become cynical over the "communist revolution" of his Soviet superiors. He and the rest of his team fought valiantly, and in the end Brekhov, Horrorshow, Stormavik and Schrage were all killed in action. The team would continue on with new members, but Colonel Brekhov would never be forgotten by his allies or his enemies. (GI 6, 7; YB 2, 4; SM 1, 4, 26; Figures: 1, 2)

BROCA, FRED. (see FRED I; WADE COLLINS)

BROCA, HEATHER. (see HEATHER COLLINS)

BROCA, SEAN. (see KAMAKURA)

BUDO. The code name used by G.I. Joe team member Sergeant Kyle A. Jesso. Born in Sacramento, California, Budo learned that his great-great-grandfather had been a fencing master one of the last great samurai warrior families in Japan. At age eighteen, he was given the family swords and learned various martial arts, including Iaido, "the art of the live blade". He has a fifth-degree black belt in Iaido, and is ranked high in other fighting arts. Despite his respect for ancient traditions, Budo spent much of his youth more interested in a heavy metal rock and roll lifestyle and riding his motorcycle.

Though his military career caught the eye of Duke and Hawk, to enter the G.I. Joe team, Budo had to participate in an intense training program. Out of dozens of applicants, only three remained: Budo, Repeater and Lightfoot. Their first mission for the team soon followed, and it was the Joe team's "final exam": a true-life combat situation. The Piccatinny weapons arsenal was being raided by Cobra forces. After their team leader, Grand Slam, was injured in a firefight, the three new Joes performed well and repelled the attackers, learning in the process that it was actually Destro's Iron Grenadier army disguised as Cobra who had attacked the arsenal. Budo continued on with the team, participating in many missions until the team was shut down. In the years following the break up of the team, Budo became a bounty hunter in Tokyo along with Jinx, and the two have become romantically involved. Budo and Jinx worked again with their former teammates when Snake-Eyes headed to Tokyo to track down Firefly. Taking down Firefly would be the final test for Snake-Eyes' apprentice, Kamakura, and both men wanted revenge on Firefly personally. Budo and Jinx assisted in the mission, but the mission went awry after the sudden appearance of Storm Shadow. Firefly and the ninja both escaped, and the team was surprised when Duke and Chuckles showed up and informed them that Firefly was part of a bigger terrorist plot, led by a former black ops teammate of Kamakura who had also worked for Duke, Mikhail Derenko. While part of the plot was foiled by the former Joes, Firefly and Derenko escaped.

A short time later, the G.I. Joe team was reinstated and Jinx was asked to join the team, though Budo remained in Japan. He later joined with Jinx and Billy to help Storm Shadow rescue his love and ninja apprentice Junko Akita from rogue Red Ninjas. After the Joe team was again disbanded by the military, Jinx returned to Japan but she and Budo soon broke up, as he began to claim that a ninja like Jinx could never understand the honor of a samurai. In reality, this was all a ruse by Budo to protect Jinx from his mission to infiltrate the organization of Hayatu Toba, a Japanese weapons manufacturer and head of a secret group called the Tatenokai that was dedicated to overthrow the current Japanese government. A year later, Jinx received word that Budo needed her help to stop Toba. She contacted the recently reestablished Joe team, who quickly put together a team of the nearest available reserve team members. Jinx and the others infiltrated the group's headquarters while Budo continued to pretend to work for Toba, and allowed the other Joes to be captured. They all learned that Destro sent Mistress Armada to join forces with Toba. When Toba refused to follow her orders, she killed him and started the coup without him. As the Tatenokai forces rolled through the streets of Tokyo, many of the soldiers turned on each other. Budo had worked to subvert many of them away from Toba's control, and they and the Joes put a stop to the attempted rebellion. Jinx continues to serve as a reserve member of the G.I. Joe team, while Budo has chosen to continue fighting against the criminal element in Tokyo. (GI 82; MA 2-4; SM:T; Figures: 1, 2)

BULGAKOV, CAPTAIN. A Soviet naval captain who served as the harbor master of Kaliningrad, the headquarters of the Soviets' Baltic Fleet. Bulgakov was a competent officer and was always loyal to the communist party. But that all changed after his wife took her own life. His wife was a loyal party member, but she discovered that her husband would never be promoted to Admiral because she was a Jew. Bulgakov's loyalty to the party died with her. Bulgakov decided to defect and secretly contacted the United States for assistance. The navy planted a rumor that an American submarine was disabled and sitting on the floor of the Baltic Sea. The G.I. Joe team was sent out to stage a rescue mission. The "rescue" was noticed by the October Guard, who were in the Baltic on a ship called the Udaloy, placed under the command of Bulgakov. While the October Guard attempted to stop the Joes' rescue, Cobra attacked, trying to recover the sub for themselves. In the end, the mission's true purpose was discovered, but it was too late. Bulgakov revealed his desire to defect to the October Guard and was plucked off of the Udaloy by a G.I. Joe transport plane using a special extraction harness. Afterward, Bulgakov quietly retired to the United States. His current status is unknown. (SM 1)

BULLET-PROOF. The code name used by the G.I. Joe team's Drug Elimination Force leader, Major Earl S. Morris. Bullet-Proof was born in Chicago. He later joined the Drug Enforcement Agency where he served in Central America, the Golden Triangle and the Caribbean as a field officer. His amazing luck when leading raids and firefights against drug lords earned him the nickname "Bullet-proof" from the criminals he fought. Bullet-Proof is also a qualified pilot of the Desert Apache helicopter. After being placed in command of the newly-formed Drug Elimination Force, Bullet-Proof lead the team of Mutt, Cutter and Shockwave against the drug lord known as Headman, and his henchman known as Headhunters. Headman has set up a drug-dealing business in Broca Beach, a seaside town secretly controlled by Cobra. In one difficult raid, Bullet-Proof would have been killed if not for his heavy bullet-proof vest. The team rid Broca Beach of drugs without even realizing Cobra's involvement in the town. Eventually, led the DEF in tracking down one of Headman's drug shipments. Headman himself was bringing drugs into New York when the DEF caught up with him, chasing his boat through nearby waters. In the end, it was Cobra Commander himself who saw to Headman's final defeat, using the commandeered military laser installation hidden in the Chrysler Building. Headman's vessel was destroyed before the DEF's eyes. The Joe team's Drug Elimination Force was discontinued shortly thereafter, and Bullet-Proof returned to fighting drug smugglers with the DEA. Today, Bullet-Proof, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new G.I. Joe team. (GI 124, 125, 127; Figures: 1, 2)

BURKHART, DR. ADELE. A brilliant scientist turned outspoken activist, Dr. Adele Burkhart crossed paths with the G.I. Joe team on several occasions. After completing work on what the press would later call the "Doomsday Project", Burkhart began to speak out against the project, claiming that she was misled by the military about just what her work would be used for. The military was forced to take Burkhart seriously because of her knowledge of top secret information and her apparent willingness to speak to the press about it. While some considered her a traitor, the government considered her an embarassment. During a speaking tour, the train on which Burkhart was being interviewed was attacked by Cobra operatives led by the Baroness. The Baroness captured Burkhart a brought her to an island in the Caribbean that was being controlled by Cobra. At that installation Burkhart met face to face with Cobra commander. It was made clear that Burkhart would tell him her secrets or she would die. Burkhart was surprised when the G.I. Joe team attacked the island and rescued her. Burkhart had expected the government to just let her die, and reconsidered some of her opinions about the military.

In the years following her rescue, Dr. Burkhart became a humanitarian, trying to further the cause of peace throughout the world. Burkhart and a group of peacekeepers were working in the Central American nation of Sierra Gordo, hoping to negotiate an end to a civil war. In the end, one group didn't appreciate meddling from other countries and killed most of the peacekeepers, except for Burkhart. She was being held in a bunker deep in the jungle, where her interrogator planned to use powerful drugs to extract her knowledge. Again, the US turned to the Joe team to rescue Burkhart, and a small group was sent to retrieve her. As before, some of the Joes were not completely pleased with Burkhart. Once she was rescued, Burkhart was upset that others had to die to save her. This angered Ripcord, but Stalker -- who had particpated in the first mission to rescue the scientists -- defended Burkhart and her right to her beliefs, even though he didn't agree with her. By now, Burkhart was learning to respect the Joes. In the aftermath of the Cobra Island civil war, the Joe team found themselves on the losing side. When their failure became an embarrassment, the corrupt generals who had authorized the Joes' involvement claimed that Generals Hawk and Hollingsworth had acted alone in an unauthorized mission. Many members of the Joe team were arrested, but in Washington, DC, Roadblock escaped the military police. Burkhart was watching a news report about the Joes arrest when she heard a knock at the door of her home in Georgetown. She was surprised to see Roadblock -- one of the Joes who rescued her in Sierra Gordo -- at her front door, asking for her help. After telling him to get inside before the Feds spotted him, she agreed to help the team rescue Hawk and Hollingsworth, who were being held in a psychiatric hospital in Virginia. The corrupt General Malthus had let a news crew into the hospital to make his accusations against the Joe team's commanders. The crew was surprised to see Burkhart make her way inside the hospital, claiming the Joes were wrongly accused. Her appearance created a diversion long enough for the assault team to get inside and begin their rescue. Burkhart herself was nearly shot, outraged that Malthus' men were firing with civilians in range. Roadblock had to tackle her to the ground to get her under cover. In the end, with the timely intervention of Destro, the Generals' corruption was exposed and the Joe team was cleared of all charges. Burkhart continues to be a peace activist, and though she is not exactly friends with the military, Burkhart has more respect for soldiers than she had before, and the members of the G.I. Joe team consider her an ally. (GI 1, 38, 39, 77, 78; GID 3)

BURN OUT. Walter O. Jones could have been an engineer if he hadn't dropped out of a top technical school during freshman orientation and moved on to less reputable pursuits. From an early age, growing up in Catskill, New York, he was fascinated with motorcycles and started to use his natural genius at mechanics to build handcrafted custom motorcycles. His bikes caught the attention of Zartan who recruited him for his new, organized Dreadnoks gang. Under the name Burn Out, he became one of the group's chief mechanics. Zartan also sparked Burn Out's interest in disguise, which he continues to pursue. And like any good Dreadnok, he still likes to destroy things. Burn Out crossed paths with the G.I. Joe team while trying to protect Cobra Commander during a fight between Snake-Eyes, Billy and Storm Shadow. He was also one of the Dreadnoks who attacked Roadblock on the set of his television cooking show. Burn Out was later part of the large force of Dreadnoks that Zartan sent into battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. He also helped free Zartan from a governement facility where he was being held after he was captured while posing as Cobra Commander. (GIv2 21, 22, 24, 25, 36-38; FL 18; Figure: 1 )

BUZZER. Not much about Buzzer's past is certain, but he is rumored to have once been Richard Blinken-Smythe (aka Dick Blinken), a sociologist from Cambridge, England who went to Australia to study biker gangs and never came back. It is believed he ended up joining a gang and eventually joined the Dreadnoks. Buzzer's high opinion of himself and his own intelligence often got him into trouble. His weapon of choice is a diamond-toothed chainsaw that can tear through almost anything. He was one of the three Dreadnoks who traveled to the United States with Zartan, who began working for Cobra. For a time he was the informal leader of the Dreadnoks. After stealing Zartan's motorcycle and joyriding with Ripper and Torch, Buzzer was captured by the Joes. After a long stay at Joe headquarters, Buzzer was taken from the Pit by a military police bus, along with another prisoner named Candy. Candy had been Ripcord's girlfriend and was now a suspected Cobra agent due to her father's involvement in Cobra. Buzzer took an immediate liking to the young woman, but she was disgusted by him. Buzzer managed to get control of the bus and nearly killed the guard and driver. He took off, with Candy still on board the bus. She was terrified and upset that she'd now appear to be working with Buzzer to escape. Buzzer stole a pick-up truck and forced Candy to go along with him. Eventually, Candy found a shotgun in the pickup truck and forced Buzzer out of the truck at gunpoint. Buzzer pleaded for his life by the side of the road, but was surprised that Candy just drove off, leaving him there. Buzzer walked the rest of the way to Springfield, where he was soon involved in the murder of the Hard Master, and the incidental death of Candy. Buzzer eventually lost the role of unofficial Dreadnok leader to Zartan's sister, Zarana. After working with Cobra for years, the Dreadnoks were reorganized into a national biker gang led by Zartan. In 2001, they began working again with Cobra and renewed their fight against the G.I. Joe team. After a battle in the streets of Washington against the Joes and an new, advanced BAT, Buzzer and many of the original Dreadnoks were arrested and held in Blackwater Prison. They were eventually freed due to the legal mechanations of Tomax and Xamot and went on to join in the battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. They later freed Zartan from a military facility where he was being held prisoner. Over a year later, he and others fought Duke and General Rey when they came looking for information about Rey's past from Zandar. BYRNE, D.J. An FBI special ops agent who later became a member of the U.S. military's covert operations group, the Hammer Team. Byrne and two of his teammates were killed in an attempt to capture the mercenary Firefly, some time after the break up of Cobra in 1995. (MA 1)
