DAEMON. The code name used by G.I. Joe recruit Jeff Lacefield. Growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, Daemon was picked on relentlessly by other kids for his small frame and inability to take a joke. He found refuge in science fiction, comic books and video games. From age 12, Daemon began learning all he could about computers and was constantly upgrading his system and teaching himself to program. By the time he graduated high school, he had become more of a normal kid, while still mastering computers. He began a master programmer and when he was 21, he started creating computer viruses -- one of which made its way into the FBI's computer system. Daemon was arrested by the Feds, but they realized they could make use of his skills and he began working for the government. He was put on temporary assignment with the G.I. Joe team to help put a stop to Cobra's nano-mites. He and fellow hacker, Firewall, both stayed with the team longer, working with the Joes' resident computer expert, Mainframe. The Joes drill sergeant, Beach Head began running the programmers through a training program should they ever see combat. Firewall mostly stuck to computers, but Daemon took up Beach Head's challenge and tried to make himself a soldier, despite his inherent awkwardness. He and Firewall used their skills to assist in several missions, including the fight to stop terrorist Tyler Wingfield. Daemon and Firewall display their immaturity when working together, with a relationship like two squabbling siblings. Daemon continued to work on being a real member of the Joe team, and on his first field assignment, he -- along with Firewall -- helped drive the vehicle carrying a group of children who were revealed to be the clones of Serpentor. The Joes' convoy of vehicles was unexpectedly attacked by the forces of the revived Serpentor, known at The Coil. The main vehicle was torn to pieces and Serpentor arrived to liberate his brothers inside. When Daemon tried to stop him and as Firewall and Roadblock looked on, the former Cobra Emperor grabbed Daemon by the throat and snapped his neck, killing him. The remaining Joes were taken prisoner and held on Cobra Island until an invasion force arrived to battle The Coil. It's still uncertain how Firewall will deal with the death of her friend. Some time after the battle on Cobra Island, at Arlington National Cemetery, Daemon's name was added to a new memorial dedicated to the fallen members of the G.I. Joe team. (GIv2 3, 4, 10, 17, 22; FL 13)

DAINA. The only female member of the October Guard, Daina L. Janack was also the team's only Czechoslovakian, born in the city of Ostrava. While many considered the unit to be the Soviet Union's equivalent of G.I. Joe, it was actually made up of soldiers from the nations of the Warsaw Pact, which included Czechoslovakia. Daina served as both the team's sniper and a helicopter pilot and was known for having a bad temper. Daina was the second most tactically intelligent member next to Brekhov, and often took the role of second-in-command. Over the latter years of the Cold War, the October Guard came up against both Cobra and the G.I. Joe team. Cobra often played the two teams against each other, but the Joes and the Guard occasionally teamed up to defeat their common enemy. After serving with the same team members for several years, Daina witnessed the deaths of her teammates, Colonel Brekhov, Horrorshow, Schrage and Stormavik while rescuing a rebel leader El Jefe in Sierra Gordo. Only Daina and Dragonsky remained when they and a number of Joes were double-crossed and captured. The team soon added new members Lt. Gorky and Sgt. Misha, and Daina acted as the team's new leader. The new Guard teamed up with the Joes, once again heading to Sierra Gordo to fight the Iron Grenadiers. Shortly after, the Soviet Union dissolved, and Daina's native Czechoslovakia split apart, making her a citizen of the Czech Republic. Though the October Guard was disbanded, its former members often worked together. Under Russian Colonel Red Star, the Guard headed off into space on a mission with the Joes. It was nearly a decade before Daina met the Joes again. She was eventually assigned to Czech special forces where she led a team of soldiers that assisted both the Joes and Destro in rescuing Flint and the Baroness. They had been kidnapped by the Russian mob and were being held in the Czech Republic. During that mission, Lt. Gorky betrayed Daina and the others after being pulled into the corruption of his previous Russian unit, and was killed. Shaken by his death and tired of the difficult times her country was going through, Daina decided to move to the United States where she hoped to join the G.I. Joe team. She made it onto the team, where she soon took part in the battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. Shortly after, Daina adopted the code name "Vorona," (Czech for "crow") and is proud to be a part of the team she once considered the enemy. Her teammates have been more than happy to school her in American culture. On her first mission as Vorona, she took part in a fight off the coast of Cobra Island that served as a distraction to allow Barrel Roll to infiltrate Cobra's headquarters. She then began working with Claymore in the Joe team's overseas operations. After the Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Vorona, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. DAN. The late brother of Cobra Commander. Years before his brother became Cobra Commander, Dan was a soldier in the Vietnam war. He kept signing on for new tours in Southeast Asia to be sure his brother wasn't drafted. When Dan finally returned home, he had changed. Years of war had warped his mind and given him a death wish. Dan began driving fast, weaving in and out of traffic on the highway, as if daring death to take him. Death caught up with him, when in a drunken stupor, he caused a head-on collision with another car. Dan and the other car's occupants were killed instantly. In that other car was Snake-Eyes' parents and twin sister Terri, on their way to meet Snake-Eyes at the airport. He was returning home from Vietnam. Dan's death devastated Cobra Commander. He became obsessed with making someone pay for Dan's death. He turned it all around in his head, blaming the family's surviving son for the accident. His search for vengeance destroyed his family and his own sanity, eventually leading him to form Cobra. (GI 26, 84)

DARKLON. The man known as Darklon was from a long line of mercenaries and profiteers, and he is as greedy and amoral as any of them ever were. His family's ancestral home is an imposing castle in the tiny nation of Darklonia. Darklon is actually a distantly related cousin of Destro. Darklon became involved with Cobra shortly after Destro took control of the organization. Darklon was selling surplus Cobra and G.I. Joe vehicles, and Destro wanted test subjects for Dr. Mindbender's Pythonizing process, which rendered vehicles invisible to radar. Darklon sold Cobra a number of vehicles, testing them by sneaking over Darklonia's border with Wolkekuckuckland. Eventually, Darklon joined with Destro's Cobra and took over the leadership of the Iron Grenadiers when Destro and the Baroness took time off away from Cobra. When Cobra began occupying parts of Sierra Gordo, Darklon led an attack on nearby Punta Del Mucosa. Later, he led a small army of Grenadiers against the country's native Tucaros, who were allied with a team of Joes and the October Guard. After Destro severed his ties with Cobra, Darklon returned to his business interests in Darklonia. Years later, when Cobra took over neighboring Borovia, Cobra Commander brainwashed Destro into service and commandeered his castle in nearby Trans-Carpathia. When the Commander suggested Darklon was a threat to them, Destro casually launched a missile at Castle Darklon. The resulting explosion killed Darklon and destroyed much of his castle. DART. The code name used by U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jimmy Tall Elk. Born in White Earth, Minnesota, Dart became a hunting guide while still only in his teens. His knowledge of the natural world and Native American lore was passed down from his father and grandfather. By the time he joined the Army, Dart was an expert tracker, and to his credentials added Airborne and Ranger training. He participated in dozens of classified reconnaissance missions and is believed to have at least two presidential awards locked away in a top secret vault in the Pentagon. Those who served with him suggest his tracking abilities come from some psychic abilities, though Dart credits his skill and patience. On his first mission for the Joe team, Dart was sent into Sierra Gordo to assist Sierra Gordo in its battle against invaders from neighboring Sierra Muerte. The situation there become even more volatile and the team came under attack, with some Joes seriously injured. Dart had been in few battle situations and was shaken by the experience. He spent some time on "psych leave" to deal with the trauma and soon returned to duty, fighting Cobra forces that were drawn into an attack on a train guarded by the Joes, believing that Destro was being held prisoner onboard. After the Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Dart, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. (GIv2 29, 30, 32; Figures: 1, 2, 3)

DAY, SERGEANT. A soldier in Britain's elite Special Air Service (SAS). Day was partnered with SAS officer Smythe-Barrett while helping Flint and Lady Jaye retrieve Terror-Drome plans from Destro's castle in Scotland. When the group discovered that the real Destro had been arrested and replaced by an imposter, they rescued Destro from prison and helped him reclaim his castle in exchange for the Terror-Drome plans. Day's quiet demeanor was a sharp contrast to Smythe-Barrett's. (GI 57)

DECOBRAY, ANASTASIA. see BARONESS

DECOBRAY, BARON EUGEN. The older brother of the Baroness. DeCobray used his wealth for humanitarian purposes and had hoped to provide medical supplies to the native people of Vietnam during the Vietnam War. When the Tet Offensive began, Eugen was in Vietnam with his sister, Anastasia, and stopped at a warehouse where the medical supplies were supposed to be stored. He found the warehouse empty, and discovered that his contacts were selling the supplies to buy weapons. When DeCobray confronted them, the two men shot him dead. At that moment, a young soldier -- Snake-Eyes -- arrived and killed the two men. Anastasia rushed into the room and saw Snake-Eyes there, believing he killed them all, including Eugen. Taken away before Snake-Eyes was cleared of murder, Anastasia became angry, bitter and disillusioned. She soon became a radical student activist and eventually an international terrorist known as the Baroness. (GI 94-97)

DEE-JAY

DEEP SIX. The code name used by U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Malcolm R. Willoughby. Deep Six was born in Baltimore, Maryland, where he became known as a solitary person, spending his free time on solitaire and crossword puzzles. He eventually became a Navy diver so that "I could be alone." When Deep Six first joined the G.I. Joe team, most Joes found him to be unfriendly and gruff, but he earned their respect for his skills. Deep Six piloted the SHARC flying submarine for the Joe team, but often he served as part of the crew of various naval vessels, including the Joes' freighter, the Jane, and the WHALE hovercraft. In his first mission on the Joe team, Deep Six served as a gunner on the WHALE hovercraft in a battle against Cobra in the Florida Everglades. He and some other Joes were injured and the WHALE was damaged in a firelight. The Joes managed to patch up the hovercraft and strike back at Cobra. The other Joes were impressed by Deep Six's will to fight on after being injured. He was hospitalized for a short time after the battle. Some time later, while serving onboard the freighter Jane, Deep Six and a handful of Joes fought off Cobra Rattler jets in the middle of a stormy sea. The Joes destroyed the Rattlers, but not before the Jane had been damaged enough to sink. Deep Six and the rest of the crew boarded a life raft and were eventually rescued. A short time later, Deep Six attempted to destroy an underwater Cobra bunker in the Gulf of Mexico. When the SHARC's torpedoes didn't even scratch the concrete bunker, the Joes called in a bombing run that destroyed the bunker, but aggravated a fault line causing land to emerge from the ocean and form what would become Cobra Island. During a mission into the North Atlantic, Deep Six and several undercover Joes posed as the crew of a fishing boat. They were found out and fought Cobra and the October Guard while pretending to rescue a sunken American sub. That mission was fake as well, hiding their true mission to help a Soviet admiral defect to the United States. Deep Six transmitted false images of a submarine on the ocean floor using video equipment in his SHARC. The Joes managed to retrieve the Soviet admiral without firing a single shot. Years later, Deep Six would help fight the October Guard once again, transporting two Joes to Cobra Island to discover the Soviets' reason for staging a secret mission onto the island. Deep Six's subsequent missions for the Joes remain classified, but he stayed on the team until it was shut down in 1994. He was later called back to join the reinstated Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. After the Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Deep Six, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. DEKE. An American fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, Deke was shot down and held as a prisoner of war for three years. Upon his return home, no one wanted to Deke to fly again, due to "psychological instability". Disillusioned and feeling he had nowhere else to go outside of the military, Deke decided the only opportunity he'd have to fly again was as a mercenary pilot. The Middle Eastern dictator Colonel Sharif had been hiring experienced pilots with no background checks and Deke signed on. Deke was later contacted by a group of Joes asking for information about Sharif's air defenses. Deke didn't hesitate to help, assisting Stalker, Leatherneck, Slip-Stream and Crankcase by detailing the locations of the surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites that protected Sharif's airfield. One of Sharif's spies had overheard Deke and the Joes' meeting at a sidewalk cafe and an officer named Captain Habib arrested the pilot and interrogated him. Deke was tied to a chair and beaten while Habib asked where the Americans were hiding. He refused to sell out the Joes until Habib threatened to blind him with a screw-driver so that he could never fly again. Habib untied Deke's arms so that he could sign his typed-up "confession". Habib taunted him, explaining there was another hidden SAM site and mocked him for being cowardly enough to sell out his friends. Fed up, Deke jammed his pen into the desk and through Habib's hand. He managed to escape and headed for the airfield, where the Joes were all ready headed. They planned to steal a Russian jet while a squadron of American fighters attacked. Knowing that the American pilots were dead without knocking out the hidden SAM site, he climbed into his fighter and took off. As the Joes escaped with the Russian jet inside a transport plane, Deke crashed his fighter into the SAM site before it could fire, sacrificing his life to save his fellow American pilots. (SM 3)

DELACRUZ, JESUS. The current president of the nation of Sierra Gordo, Delcruz was elected in 1998 after the end of the country's years of civil war. He made a deal with Joe team member Duke to help arrest Destro when he tried to set up arms manufacturing bases in Sierra Gordo. (GIv2 28, 29, 30)

DEPTH CHARGE. The code name used by U.S. Navy Petty Officer Nick H. Langdon, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Depth Charge was one of the reinstated G.I. Joe team's "greenshirt" recruits. He eventually worked his way to a regular spot on the team, becoming a full-fledged Joe shortly after the team's battle against the forces of a revived Sepentor on Cobra Island. As part of the Navy UDT (underwater demoltions team), Depth Charge has a working knowledge of various explosives and is SCUBA and Airborne qualified. He has some of the highest ratings in all these skills that the program has ever recorded. While Depth Charge loves his demoltions work, he hates being in the water, but does so to do everything else about UDT he loves. In addition to his military skills, Depth Charge is a musician who plays the glockenspiel. After the Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Depth Charge, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. (GIv2 28; Figure: 1, 2)

DERENKO, MIKHAIL. see Overlord

DeSADE. One of the group of torturers known as the Paine Brothers. DeSade and his brothers Crispo and Torquemada were hired by Cobra and were assigned by the Baroness to torture Snake-Eyes while he was imprisoned in the Cobra Consulate. Before the brothers could torture him, Snake-Eyes used an old ninja trick, making them think his heart had stopped. Once their guard was down, the commando attacked them and Crispo threw a potful of hot coals at him, scarring his recently reconstructed face, but nowhere near as bad as his original disfigurement. Snake-Eyes attacked the brothers, though it is uncertain if they survived. Snake-Eyes stole DeSade's uniform -- along with Crispo's mask and Torquemada's blades -- as he made his escape, and would keep wearing the clothes for the next year or so. DeSade's status was unknown until the reinstated Joe team raided what turned out to be a Cobra medical facility. One of the bedridden patients under medical care was DeSade, along with his brothers. The military is investigating each patient's status and why they were placed in that facility. (GI 95)

DESTRO

DIAL-TONE. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Jack S. Morelli. As a ten-year-old boy growing up in Eugene, Oregon, Dial-Tone built his first crystal set. At 14 he was part of a CB net and had his own ham radio station by 16. Dial-tone taught himself how to build all sorts of radios and communications equipment as he grew up and eventually saw the Army as a way of furthering his education and turning his hobby into a job with a purpose. He eventually joined the G.I. Joe team as a communications specialist. Dial-Tone first joined the G.I. Joe team shortly after the destruction of the team's headquarters, when the team was temporarily working out of the Fort Wadsworth gymnasium. He was soon sent on a mission to track down a Nazi war criminal hiding in Argentina. Next, Dial-tone was sent into Sierra Gordo along with several other Joes on a mission to assist that country's counter-revolutionaries in their fight against Cobra and their local allies. Some time later, Dial-tone used his expertise to covertly plant a listening device at the Cobra Consulate in New York City, allowing the Joes to spy on their enemy for nearly two years before the bug was discovered. In another covert operation, Dial-tone assisted in hostage situation at the American PX in Germany. Months later, he joined nearly the entire G.I. Joe team when they entered the Cobra Island civil war on the side of Serpentor. He was a part of an even bigger operation years later when the Joes fought in the Battle of Benzheen when Cobra tried to take over a small but wealthy nation in the Middle East. When Cobra Commander led an assault in the Pit III in Utah, Dial-tone was one of the many defenders of the Joes' HQ. He spent time testing new weapons systems before being sent to Millville to help free the small town from control of Cobra. Dial-tone remained on the team for another year before the team was shut down in 1994. For the next several years, Dial-tone continued to study and develop new telecommunications technology. He eventually sold many patents and put that money into various computer companies, including Mainframe's, and became a very rich man in a small amount of time. Since the Joe team's reinstatement in 2001, Dial-tone has been working behind the scenes, and worked with Mainframe to develop the team's new, standard issue wrist communicators. He eventually returned to the field, joining in the battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. After the Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Dial-tone, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. DICE. The ninja known as Dice is known for his imposing size and skilled use of pressure points and choke holds against his enemies. He also uses snares and traps, as well as his favorite weapon, the bo staff. Rumor has it that Dice was once one of the group of mercenary ninjas, the Night Creepers. He eventually partnered with the ninja Slice. The duo first cmae into contact with Cobra and G.I. Joe when a man calling himself the Red Ninja Master contacted them and called them and a number of Red Ninjas -- renegade members of the Arashikage clan that sired Storm Shadow -- to Cobra's Silent Castle in Trans-Carpathia. The Master displayed an in-depth knowledge of many of the Arashikage fighting techniques and convinced the other ninjas of his identity. Since Cobra Commander hadn't used the castle for years and Slice, Dice and the Red Ninjas easily ventured to the castle. Slice and Dice were surprised when Destro and the Baroness arrived at the castle after Destro was given the castle by Cobra Commander. When Dice and the other ninjas attacked Destro, they discovered the Joes had been watching, including Ninja Force. After a long battle, the ninjas escaped the castle into the wilderness with the Ninja Force close behind. After Snake-Eyes defeated Slice in a duel to settle their dispute, the Red Ninja Master arrived and revealed himself to be Firefly. The mercenary had fooled the ninjas and after a brief fight, ambushed both groups of ninjas with his Cobra BATs and knocked them out with gas. He used Cobra's Brain-wave Scanner to turn Dice and the others into his brainwashed slaves and headed to Cobra Island, long since unoccupied by Cobra. The Ninja Force eventually broke free, but Slice, Dice and the Red Ninjas remained under his control for a time. After a small team of Joes landed on the island and fought BATs and ninjas, Firefly's hold was broken. Slice and Dice escaped, but eventually joined Cobra. Since most of Cobra's high command had turned their backs on the Commander, Slice and Dice worked closely with the Commander for a time, joining in the fight against Joes in the Cobra-controlled town of Millville, among other operations. Slice and Dice eventually left Cobra some time before the organization was scattered by an attack from regular military forces in 1995. Their current status is unknown. DIMITRI. A guard at a rebel stronghold in the nation of Sierra Gordo. Dimitri was one of two snipers stationed in the stronghold's guard tower when the G.I. Joe team attempted to rescue Dr. Adele Burkhart from the rebels. During a brief firelight, Dimitri and another sniper named Gregor shot and killed two Tucaro tribesman who helped the Joes. The rescue was successful and the Joes fled into the jungle. Dimitri and Gregor followed the Joes into the jungle. They were apparently killed by Recondo when the Joe backtracked to see if they were followed. Recondo may have been seeking revenge for the Tucaros, whom he had lived among for months. He threw the guards' rifles in the river as a sacrifice to the river spirits the Tucaros believed in. (GI 39)

DOC

DOCTOR BRAIN-WAVE. A nickname for Dr. Mindbender, used only by Destro. This was one of Destro's subtle ways of mocking Mindbender. (GI 44)

DOCTOR MINDBENDER

DOCTOR SID. A nickname for Dr. Sidney Biggles-Jones used by guards in her laboratory. (GI 135)

DOCTOR VENOM. Little is known about Dr. Venom. He is rumored to have once been a brilliant scientist before turning to fields of study no reputable scientist would have anything to do with. As his experiment moved into the fields of biological manipulation and mind control, Venom lost his backers, one by one. The only group willing to fund his work was Cobra. Venom's immense ego told him it made no difference who he worked for, as long as his genius was not stifled. Venom's greatest creation was the Brain-wave Scanner, that allowed Venom to peer into the mind of his subjects and pull out images and information. The process was very painful.

Dr. Venom first encountered the G.I. Joe team when Snake-Eyes, Scarlett and Zap were captured and taken to Springfield, the hidden Cobra town. If anyone in Springfield decided he or she wanted to leave Cobra, Venom's Scanner would ensure that they changed their minds. Venom first used the machine on Snake-Eyes, trying to learn the secrets of the G.I. Joe team. Snake-Eyes fought the machine and then fooled Venom into believing he was dead, using a ninja technique that slowed his heart rate and simulated death. He then escaped the Brain-wave Scanner and the other Joes escaped Springfield. Shortly afterward, Snake-Eyes, Stalker, Breaker and Gung-Ho travelled to Sierra Gordo where they were captured by Cobra agents led by the Baroness and Dr. Venom. The scientist left Snake-Eyes in a burning warehouse, believing the commando was dead. By the time Venom realized Snake-Eyes had tricked him again, it was too late. Snake-Eyes escaped and rescued his teammates. Snake-Eyes confronted the Eskimo mercenary, Kwinn and Venom at a Cobra bunker in the middle of a small island in Sierra Gordo. Before they could fight, the Baroness bombed the island, trying to kill Kwinn and Venom because they knew too much. The three men survived and escaped the bunker, but soon Venom betrayed Kwinn and Snake-Eyes, saving himself, not caring that the others had helped save his life. Kwinn knew Venom was nothing but a dishonorable coward and vowed to exact his revenge on the Cobra scientist. Venom returned to Cobra and helped plan a scheme to poison the people of the United States with his deadly virus. When the first plan failed, Venom infected Scar-Face, hoping to infect the Joes and discover their secret base. Kwinn and Snake-Eyes tracked down Venom just before a major Cobra attack on G.I. Joe headquarters. When Cobra arrived, using Venom's private lab on Brooklyn's waterfront as a staging area for the assault, Snake-Eyes and Kwinn where captured and placed them in mind-controlling SNAKE battle armor. During the assault on Joe headquarters, Snake-Eyes and Kwinn broke free of the armor's control, surprising Venom who arrogantly believed his devices where unbeatable. Venom was horrified when Kwinn came after him and planned to kill him with a hand grenade. The Eskimo was about to kill the scientist when he realized that he had been fooling himself as he sought his revenge. His life as a mercenary had been just as dishonorable as Venom's life. He let the scientist live, but the cowardly Venom shot Kwinn in the back, taunting him as he died. But Venom had once again underestimated him opponent and overestimated himself. As Kwinn's lifeless body fell to the ground, the grenade he had intended to kill Venom with fell from his hand. It exploded and killed the scientist. A short time later, Dr. Venom was buried in a potter's field, his body claimed by no one.

Years later, Venom's evil lived on when Cobra began to once again used the Brain-wave Scanner. The scanner played an important role in Dr. Mindbender's creation of the Cobra emperor, Serpentor. Mindbender later improved upon Venom's original design and used the new scanner to subjugate the town of Millville. Dr. Venom's name still lives on today, a legend in the realm of crime and terrorism. (GI 10, 12, 14-19)

DODGER

DOGFIGHT. The code name used by U.S. Army Lieutenant James R. King, from Providence, Rhode Island. Dogfight piloted the Mudfighter attack plane. The plane was slower than most fighter jets, but was still a threat with Dogfight in the cockpit. In his first mission for the G.I. Joe team, he fought Cobra fighters over the tiny Central American nation of Punta del Mucosa. He later participated the the Joes' largest operation yet, the Battle of Benzheen in the Middle East. Dogfight was serving as co-pilot when Ace's Skystriker was badly damaged during a night raid into Benzheen. Dogfight's ejection seat was damaged, and though he told Ace to eject and save himself, Ace refused. He managed to crash land the plane on the deck of the U.S.S. Flagg aircraft carrier. Both pilots came through the landing with only minor injuries. Dogfight, like most former Joes, is currently a reserve member of the team. (GI 111, 113, 115; SM 28; Figure: 1)

DOJO. The code name used by U.S. Army Master Sergeant Michael P. Russo. Dojo was born in San Francisco, but he was trained as a ninja by the Arashikage ninja, the Soft Master, in the basement of the old man's Chinese restaurant in New York City's Spanish Harlem (where the Soft Master had gone after the dissolution of his clan). Many years after the Soft Master's death, his nephew Storm Shadow recruited Dojo for his G.I. Joe Ninja Force. Among the members of the team, Dojo was known as "the talkative one", believing that speaking in the heat of battle disrupts an opponent's concentration. In Ninja Force's first mission, Dojo and his teammates Nunchuk and Tj'bang fought Cobra Night Creepers in Beirut while helping Destro to avoid assassins hired by Cobra Commander. Continuing their protection of Destro, the Ninja Force and other Joes traveled to the Silent Castle in Trans-Carpathia, where they fought Cobra Vipers and a group of Red Ninjas. It was the Ninja Force who discovered Firefly's connection to the Arashikage ninjas when the mercenary appeared in command of the Red Ninjas. The team later helped liberate the Cobra-controlled town of Millville from Cobra, fighting a band of Night Creepers. Shortly before the G.I. Joe team was shut down, Dojo and the Ninja Force opened up a martial arts training school on the site of the Soft Master's restaurant where Dojo had been trained many years before. The school was free to the underpriviledged young people living in the neighborhood. Dojo continues to run the school today. DONALD. see ROAD PIG

DOWNTOWN. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Thomas P. Riley. While playing high school basketball in Cleveland, Ohio, Riley picked up the nickname "Downtown" for never missing a foul-shot. Once in the Army, he became skilled enough with firing mortars that he can judge range and trajectory just by eyesight. Downtown served with the G.I. Joe team on a number of missions before the team was shut down in 1994. Downtown, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. (GIv2 24; Figure: 1)

DRAGONSKY. Later in life, Dragonsky became a member of the Soviet Army, but his service to his country goes back further than almost any of his comrades. Rumor has it that during the Nazis' invasion of Russia, Dragonsky -- at only five years old -- tossed Molotov cocktails at German tanks as they passed. At age six, he was present for the Battle of Stalingrad. After serving for years in the Army, Dragonsky was a late addition to the original October Guard, and by then he was an old veteran. He served as the team's mechanic and was skilled at driving almost any vehicle, including a train traveling through Afghanistan, carrying a stolen laser weapon and his teammates while fending off Cobra attacks. He also served as the team's flamethrower, using the Soviets' latest flame-retardant suit and flamegun, which he called his "Zhukov zippo". After serving with the same team members for several years, Dragonsky witnessed the deaths of his teammates, Colonel Brekhov, Horrorshow, Schrage and Stormavik while rescuing a rebel leader El Jefe in Sierra Gordo. Only Dragonsky and Daina remained when they and a number of Joes were double-crossed and captured. The team soon added new members and teamed up with the G.I. Joe team on occasion. After the Soviet Union was dissolved, the October Guard was disbanded, but its former members often worked together. Under Russian Colonel Red Star, the Guard -- including Dragonsky --  headed off into space on a mission with the Joes. Though other members of the Guard went on to meet the Joes once again, Dragonsky's current status is unknown. (GI 92, 100-105; 146-148; YB 2; SM 26; Figures: 1, 2)

DUEY. A police officer in the Springfield Police Department who -- along with fellow officers Huey and Louie -- was beaten up by the Soft Master when the old ninja master tried to access the police station's computer records in the Cobra-controlled town. (GI 42)

DUKE

DUSTY

DYSON, ADMIRAL. A veteran Navy officer, Dyson was one of the small group of officers sent to the Pit to investigate the Joe team's failure during the Battle of Springfield, along with Army General Hollingsworth and Marine General Ryan. Dyson was a thoughtful, cautious man who was willing to give Hawk the benefit of the doubt. He was known for passing on a number of old Navy sayings in situations that called for them. Ryan disagreed with the Admiral often, believing him to be an indecisive "old fool" and even cowardly at times. When Cobra forces invaded the Pit, Ryan was proved wrong when Dyson attacked a Battle Android Trooper wired with explosives. He deliberately set off the explosives, sacrificing his lives to save the other officers. (GI 53)
