| FAOUD (Benzheen). The
leader of the rebel group the People's Resistance of Benzheen. Faoud
and
his followers captured a G.I. Joe armored vehicle team during the
Battle
of Benzheen. In that operation, the Joes were allied with the country's
Emir to rid Benzheen of Cobra forces. Faoud wanted to get rid of Cobra
and oust the Emir, to establish "a socialist fundamentalist
quasi-theocracy
based on the teachings of our sect, which is better than the Emir's
sect."
Besides that, Faoud admitted he wanted to be the leader once the Emir
was
gone. The Joes' recon team rescued their teammates and captured Faoud.
During a struggle, Faoud managed to get hold of a gun and was about to
shoot Stalker when the newest Joe, Cool Breeze, pushed Stalker out of
the
way and was shot himself. Snake-Eyes opened fire and killed Faoud. Cool
Breeze died moments later. (GI 111-112) |
| FAOUD (Special Missions #11).
One of a group of terrorists who robbed the main American P.X. in
Frankfurt,
West Germany. The group were nearly successful in the robbery when they
were surprised by two off duty MPs outside the P.X. Faoud and one of
the
MPs were killed in a stuggle before the rest of the terrorists took
several
hostages and were later stopped by members of the G.I. Joe team. (SM

FAST
DRAW. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Eliot Brown,
from Collierville, TN. Fast Draw was an expert with ordnance and
portable
missile systems. His was one of the most skilled users of the FAFNIR --
"Fire and Forget Non-tube-launched Infantry Rocket" system. The
launching
system was mounted on a large backpack, and Fast Draw wore a protective
suit to shield himself from hot exhaust gases.
When Fast Draw first believed he had joined the G.I. Joe team,
he was
assigned to guard a top secret missile silo hidden on the Jersey shore,
along with two other soldiers. A short time later, a man codenamed
Chuckles
arrived and told them that they were not really a part of the Joe team.
An intelligence agent Chuckles was investigating was covering up the
existence
of the missile silo. To protect the missile, he reassigned Falcon and
the
others and told them they were part of the G.I. Joe team. To clear
their
names, the men "kidnapped" Hawk from the Newark airport and showed him
the missile. Meanwhile, a group of Dreadnoks learned of the missile and
found out it was aimed at Cobra Island. A brief battle followed, ending
when a Cobra helicopter arrived and destroyed the missile just as it
launched.
Hawk offered Falcon and the others a spot on the Joe team then and
there.
Fast Draw was one of the many Joes who participated in the Cobra Island
civil war on the side of Serpentor. He defended a number of Joes who
were
trapped on Cobra's airfield during their initial landing. Fast Draw,
like most former Joes, is now a reserve member of the current G.I. Joe
team. (GI 60, 64, 74,

| FEEDBACK. The nickname of one
of the G.I.
Joe team's greenshirt recruits. New recruits were usually given joke
nicknames
until they earned their Joe codename. After spending weeks of training,
Feedback
and her fellow "Alpha Team" recruits were sent on a training mission
led
by Beach Head into a wartorn country to fight a group of rebels. For
that
mission, Beach Head dropped the greenshirts' nicknames and referred to
them only by number, much to their aggravation. Feedback became "One".
A battle erupted as the team tried to make it to an extraction chopper
after rescuing "Three" (aka Heavy Fire). Beach Head was nearly left
behind,
but the entire team eventually escaped. (FL

| FIFTY. The nickname of one of
the G.I.
Joe team's greenshirt recruits, Marine Corporal Eddie Shrote. New
recruits were usually given joke nicknames until they earned their Joe
codename,
and
Shrote's nickname came from all the push-ups Beach Head disciplined him
with. Beach Head didn't seem to like any of the recruits, but he
especially
disliked Fifty, due to his smart mouth and questioning orders, as well
as an unflattering imitation of Beach Head. After spending weeks of
training,
Fifty and his fellow "Alpha Team" recruits were sent on a training
mission
led by Beach Head into a wartorn country to fight a group of rebels.
For
that mission, Beach Head dropped the greenshirts' nicknames and
referred
to them only by number, much to their aggravation. Fifty became "Four".
A battle erupted as the team tried to make it to an extraction chopper
after rescuing "Three" (aka Heavy Fire). When Shrote's gun jammed
during
a firefight, Beach Head ordered him to do push-ups in the midst of the
shooting. Beach Head was nearly left behind, but Fifty disobeyed his
orders
and went back to save him. Beach Head wasn't very grateful, and ordered
him to "drop and give me fifty". (FL 17) |

FIREWALL.
The code name used by G.I. Joe team recruit Michelle LaChance. While
growing
up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Firewall had a knack for computers, and
once hacked into the high school records of an enemy, altering
her
grades so that she was not in the running for class valedictorian. She
was never caught, and liked the rush of being able to ruin an uncaring
braggart. She continued hacking into computer systems, eventually
chaging
credit card numbers and bank accounts of government officials. She
stayed
undetected for some time, until she hacked her way into U.S. Army
computers
and discovered the Army's experimental nano-mite program. She was
arrested
by the Feds, but they realized they could make use of her skills and
she
began working for the government. Firewall was put on temporary
assignment
with the G.I. Joe team to help put a stop to Cobra's nano-mites. She
and
fellow hacker, Daemon, both stayed with the team longer, working with
the
Joes' resident computer expert, Mainframe. The Joes' drill sergeant,
Beach
Head began running the programmers through a training program should
they
ever see combat. Firewall stuck to mostly computer work, while Daemon
worked
to become a soldier. He and Firewall used their skills to assist in
several
missions, including the fight to stop terrorist Tyler Wingfield. Daemon
and Firewall displayed their immaturity when working together, with a
relationship
like two squabbling siblings. On their first field assignment, Firewall
and Daemon helped drive the vehicle carrying a group of children who
were
revealed to be the clones of Serpentor. The Joes' convoy of vehicles
was
unexpectedly attacked by the forces of the revived Serpentor, known at
The Coil. The main vehicle was torn to pieces and Serpentor arrived to
liberate his brothers inside. When Daemon tried to stop him, the former
Cobra Emperor grabbed him by the throat and snapped his neck, killing
him,
and as Firewall and Roadblock looked on in shock. The remaining Joes
were
taken prisoner and held on Cobra Island until an invasion force arrived
to battle The Coil. The battle was won, and the Joes headed home, later
having a ceremony for their lost teammates, who included Mainframe.
Firewall later assisted Barrel Roll remotely when he hacked
into Cobra Island's computer system. Some time later, during a battle
against Cobra, Hawk was
shot in the back by Cobra Commander and paralyzed. In Hawk's absence,
the Jugglers began to take control of the team to reign in it, if
not disband it altogether. Eventually, the team's roster was cut down
to
only a dozen Joes including Firewall. That small team defended the new
Pit against Cobra's attack, but Firewall and most of those Joes were
quickly reassigned to other units. After the remaining Joes stopped a
plot by
Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new
threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One
year later, the Joe
team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Firewall,
like
most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. Much of the
Joes' current headquarters, The Rock, was designed by Firewall and the
late Mainframe. Firewall was called back to work with the team to
assist General Colton in his attempt to hack into encrypted files to
find Duke's whereabouts. She was still at The Rock when the team was
invaded by the Phoenix Guard, a team of U.S. commandos that turned out
to be Cobra agents in disguise. The Joes eventually defeated them, but
Firewall was severely injured and is now recovering. (GIv2

FLAGG,
GENERAL LAWRENCE J. General Flagg comes from a long line of
soldiers, and early in his career, he was the captain of the Army
pistol
team. In the late 1970s, Flagg saw the need to combat terrorist threats
at home and abroad. To do so, he created Special Counter-Terrorist
Group
Delta, and code-named it "G.I. Joe," after the legendary team of
soldiers
from the 1960s. Even as Flagg created the team, the terrorist
organization
known as Cobra Command was rising in power. Flagg placed Colonel
Clayton
M. Abernathy, code-named "Hawk," in direct field command of the team.
While
Hawk reported to Flagg, Flagg reported to General Austin. Austin did
his
best to protect Flagg and the Joes from his superiors, the
politically-minded
committee of generals known as "The Jugglers." Flagg's strength lay in
his ability to know personnel and who the right man for the job was.
Flagg
was never an arrogant man and was under no delusions about his own
abilities.
His place was behind a desk making high-level decisions. The military
operations
and planning for the Joe team rested on Hawk's shoulders, but Flagg was
always on hand for support. On occasion, Flagg was personally involved
with the team. When Cobra tried to capture the G.I. Joe Mobat tank at
the
Armed Forces Day Parade in New York, Flagg nearly captured Cobra
Commander,
but was unwilling to risk the lives of the innocent people in the
crowd.
A bullet fired by Cobra Commander grazed Flagg's head, but the wound
was
minor. When Clutch wondered why Flagg didn't shoot the Commander, he
answered,
"...well, that's why we're the good guys." Months later, General Flagg
sent the Joes on a mission into Sierra Gordo which sparked a chase
around
the world to stop Cobra's plans and find the Cobra courier known as
Scar-Face.
The Joes took the injured Baroness into The Pit, possibly violating
protocol,
and Flagg vowed to take full responsibility. Soon after, when Cobra led
an assault on The Pit, Flagg tried to stop Major Bludd and Scar-Face
from
escaping their cell. A struggle ensued and Bludd fatally shot Flagg.
Despite
Doc's best efforts, he couldn't save the General. A short time later, a
ceremony was held and General Flagg was buried at Arlington National
Cemetary.
Several months later, a newly constructed aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Flagg,
was named in his honor. The Flagg became the main naval vessel
used
by the G.I. Joe team. Today, Sebastian Bludd remains at large and is
still
wanted by the government for Flagg's murder. (GI 1, 2, 3, 5, 12, 14, 19; BF 1; GI:D 1-3; Figure: 1) |
![]() FLASH.
The codename used by U.S. Army Sergeant
Anthony
S. Gambello. As a teenager, Flash played quarterback for his high
school team in Lodi, California. After enlistment and his specialized
training in Army Electronics School, Chemical School, and Covert
Electronics, Flash was assigned to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds' covert
electronics division. It was there that he developed a laser
rangefinder that caught the attention of General Lawrence Flagg. While
recruiting soldiers for inclusion on the newly-forming G.I. Joe team,
Flagg arrived at Flash's lab and abruptly asked him ******** Flash was
a very logical and methodical person, and was sometimes called
"the genius" by his teammates.
Flash was one of the original 13 members of the G.I. Joe team. He was part of many of the Joes' major missions including the rescue of Dr. Adele Burkhart, on which he and Breaker knocked out Cobra's radar station. He was on the first mission in which the Joe team met the Soviets' October Guard. When Cobra attempted to destroy a United States space shuttle, Breaker and Flash became temporary members of the shuttle's crew. In a spacesuit outside the ship, Flash grabbed on to a Cobra missle, forcing it to change course, thus saving the shuttle and its crew. He was involved in many other important operations, as well. After the re-dedication of G.I. Joe
headquarters,
aka "The Pit", Flash and many of the other original Joes were taken off
active duty. Even so, Flash continued to occasionally participate in
missions
with the team. He was part of the security team during the Joes'
invasion
of the Cobra-controlled town of Springfield. During the Cobra Island
civil
war, Flash was one of the few Joes who were not part of the operation.
After the team ended up on
the losing
side of the war, a group of corrupt generals in the
Pentagon denied having any knowledge of the debacle and announced the
Joes had gone rogue. When many members
of the team were unrightfully arrested, several others including Flash
went underground. He and the other Joes who had escaped
arrest
organized a mission to rescue Hawk and General Hollingsworth when they
were arrested for acting without orders and entering the civil war.
During
the rescue, Hawk and Hollingsworth were cleared of all charges and the
corrupt generals responsible were exposed.
Flash was later one of the many Joes involved in training new recruits
for the team,
and was a member of G.I. Joe until it was disbanded in 1994. Years
later,
Flash began participating in missions for the reinstated G.I. Joe team,
including the mission to stop Tyler Wingfield's terrorist plot. On what
was to become his final mission, Flash joined much of the Joe team
in
its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island.
To
allow for the start of the invasion, Flash and Mainframe infiltrated a
radar station to rig up explosives to destroy the facility. The two
Joes
were delayed by Serpentor's troops and were unable to get out in time.
Flash and Mainframe were both killed in the explosion that followed.
Some
time later, at Arlington National Cemetary, Flash's name was added to a
new memorial dedicated to the fallen members of the G.I. Joe team. (GI

FOOTLOOSE. The
code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Andrew D. Myers. Growing up,
Footloose
excelled at whatever he did. He was his senior class valedictorian,
captain
of the track team and an Eagle Scout. But while studying for his degree
in Physical Education, Footloose dropped out of school and became quite
weird for about three years, heading off to Venice, California to "find
himself". It suddenly came to him one day that his life had no meaning
and promptly joined the Army. After basic training and AIT at Fort
Benning,
he attended jump school and the desert training unit. He eventually
joined
the G.I. Joe team as an infantry trooper. Upon his arrival on the Joe
team,
he found himself nervous and on edge due to being quickly thrust into
duty,
battling Cobra's new Crimson Guard at the Arbco Brothers Circus where
the
elite Cobras were secretly stationed. A short time later, he and
several
other Joes stormed a house on Staten Island where an undercover Cobra
agent
had been living. The discoveries after the raid led the Joes to the
Gulf
of Mexico and the newly created Cobra Island. Footloose quickly settled
into life on the Joe team and participated in many missions, including
an undercover mission in Afghanistan to recover a top secret laser
cannon
from the October Guard, and a near-disastrous mission to capture a
Soviet
scientist in Southeast Asia. Later, Footloose served as part of the
security
detail at the Joes' secret facility at the Presidio in San Francisco.
Years later, Footloose eventually joined the reinstated Joe team in its
invasion of Cobra Island to battle
the
forces of a revived Serpentor. After the Joes stopped a plot by Cobra
to
unleash
the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red
Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe
team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Footloose,
like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. (GI

| FOURNIER, SERGEANT. A sergeant
with the
Canadian Mounted Police. Fournier and his colleague, Inspector Cates,
worked
with members of the G.I. Joe team to investigate the shipment of Cobra
Terror-Drome components to Montreal. After a firefight in the city's
warehouse
district, the men tracked down Cobra's potential buyers to the remote
Abitibi
territory of Northern Quebec. They discovered the shipments originated
in Denver, where the presumed-dead Cobra Commander was readying to
return
to Cobra. (GI 97, 98) |
| FRED I. The first Crimson
Guardsman known
as Fred Broca was one of many identical Cobra agents sharing his name.
Virtually nothing is known of Fred's past, and it is unknown if the
other
Freds were patterned after him, or if he, too underwent plastic surgery
to give him a new face. Fred, his wife and two children -- Shaun and
Heather
-- were one of the first undercover Crimson Guard families, living like
the average suburban Americans. Fred was sent to Staten Island, where
the
Brocas moved into a new home just outside the gates of Fort Wadsworth,
an Army base Cobra believed to be connected to the Joes. The base was,
in fact, the home of The Pit. After weeks of surveillance, Fred was
surprised
when Destro and Firefly arrived at his house. He joined them in their
attempt
to find Snake-Eyes at his cabin in the High Sierras. The Cobra agents
found
the cabin and opened fire as they stormed the cabin. Luckily for
Snake-Eyes,
Spirit and Airborned were nearby and a fierce battle erupted, leading
to
the destruction of the cabin. As they fought, Spirit shot Fred, who
stumbled
off into the snow. Fred's body was found a short time later by the
Joes,
after the Crimson Guardsman bled to death. Fred's body was laid to rest
underneath a waterfall near the site of Snake-Eyes cabin. His gun was
laid
across his chest, his epitaph carved in the stone behind him: "Here
lies
Fred. Whatever he did in life, he died well." Not long after his death,
the Brocas were surprised to see Fred return home. But despite having
Fred's
face, they knew it wasn't him. Cobra had simply replaced him to
continue
the surveillance of Fort Wadsworth. Fred II was in reality a Vietnam
veteran
named Wade Collins, an old friend of Snake-Eyes, Stalker and Storm
Shadow.

| FRED VIII. A member of the Fred
series
of Cobra's elite Crimson Guard, Fred VIII shared the same face of every
other Fred through plastic surgery. Fred VIII was keeping the previous
Fred -- Fred VII -- under surveillance during his dealings with Cobra
Commander.
After Fred VIII witnessed his traitorous fellow Guardsman shoot Cobra
Commander
and carry the Commander's seemingly lifeless body into the woods near
Denver
and bury it, he allowed the traitor to leave, then dug up the
Commander.
He was not as lifeless as it first appeared, and Fred VIII -- with the
help of the network of Freds -- saw that the Commander received the
surgery
he needed to survive his wounds. For the next few years, the
presumed-dead
Cobra Commander built a new business from the ground up as he had onece
before and eventually returned to reclaim Cobra. Fred VIII was one of
the
many loyal Seigies (C.G.'s) who stood alongside the Commander as he
revealed
to his followers that he had returned. (GI

| FRED LXV. A member of the Fred
series of
the Crimson Guard, Fred LXV shared the same face of every other Fred
through
plastic surgery. Fred was stationed in Broca Beach when his wife
informed
him their son was on drugs and had bought it right in the local
convenience
store. Fred retrieved his rifle and angrily confronted the head of the
drug operation, Headman, and was swiftly shot and killed by the
Headman's
Headhunters. Headman was confident that he could continue his business
since Cobra would never call in law enforcement to their secretly
controlled
town. Fred's wife was killed when she tried to avenge her husband's
death.
Their son, Fred Junior, did not seek his own revenge, but instead went
to the next town over and tried to trade his mother's rifle for more
drugs. (GI 123-125) |

eagle who was
occasionally the companion of G.I. Joe team member, Spirit. Many
observed
that Spirit seemed to communicate with Freedom. (GI

| FREEN, WENDELL. The owner of
the company,
Nexus-Tech. The company was one of the United States' defense
contractors
and produced missile guidance systems. Freen had been overbilling the
government
for many years and was afraid the truth was about to be discovered. He
made a deal with Cobra and staged a fake hostage situation, complete
with
terrorists that were really BATs in disguise. Cobra agents posed as
hostages
and were to erase Nexus-Tech's records to keep Freen's deception a
secret. (SM 17) |
FROSTBITE. The
code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Farley S. Seward. Born in Galena,
Alaska, Frostbite was used to cold temperatures. He worked briefly as a
lineman on the Alaskan pipeline, but found it unchallenging despite to
freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions. He found challenging
work
in the Army. Frostbite graduated from transportation school at Fort
Ustis
and armored school at Fort Knox. He also became a skilled mechanic. On
the G.I. Joe team, he drove the Snow Cat arctic assault half-track.
Among
his missions for the team, Frostbite fought to free the small nation of
Frusenland from Cobra when their Terror-Dromes there activiated their
paranoia
waves and plunged the nation into chaos. Frostbite and the others were
even affected by the paranoia waves for a time before shutting them
down
with help from Battle Force 2000. On another mission, Frostbite and a
small
team of Joes teamed up with the Soviets' October Guard to destroy a
Terror-Drome
hidden beneath the ice near the border between Alaska and the U.S.S.R.
The Joe team was disbanded in 1994, but was later reinstated in 2001. A
year after, Frostbite rejoined the team, tracking down a smuggled
nuclear
device at the U.S.-Canada border. He later headed to the Arctic circle
to investigate a secret laboratory where experiments had gone wrong and
fought the mutated humans trapped inside. Some time later Frostbite
headed into Tibet
as backup for a team investigating a hidden Red Ninja retreat where
Cobra
Commander and Storm Shadow had been hiding. Some time later, after the
Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the
Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again
disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a
smaller roster of active members. Frostbite, like most former Joes, is
a reserve member of the new team. He was called back to duty to shut
down Cobra's illegal oil-drilling operation in the arctic. (GI
