FALCON

FAOUD (Benzheen). The leader of the rebel group the People's Resistance of Benzheen. Faoud and his followers captured a G.I. Joe armored vehicle team during the Battle of Benzheen. In that operation, the Joes were allied with the country's Emir to rid Benzheen of Cobra forces. Faoud wanted to get rid of Cobra and oust the Emir, to establish "a socialist fundamentalist quasi-theocracy based on the teachings of our sect, which is better than the Emir's sect." Besides that, Faoud admitted he wanted to be the leader once the Emir was gone. The Joes' recon team rescued their teammates and captured Faoud. During a struggle, Faoud managed to get hold of a gun and was about to shoot Stalker when the newest Joe, Cool Breeze, pushed Stalker out of the way and was shot himself. Snake-Eyes opened fire and killed Faoud. Cool Breeze died moments later. (GI 111-112)

FAOUD (Special Missions #11). One of a group of terrorists who robbed the main American P.X. in Frankfurt, West Germany. The group were nearly successful in the robbery when they were surprised by two off duty MPs outside the P.X. Faoud and one of the MPs were killed in a stuggle before the rest of the terrorists took several hostages and were later stopped by members of the G.I. Joe team. (SM 11)

FAST DRAW. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Eliot Brown, from Collierville, TN. Fast Draw was an expert with ordnance and portable missile systems. His was one of the most skilled users of the FAFNIR -- "Fire and Forget Non-tube-launched Infantry Rocket" system. The launching system was mounted on a large backpack, and Fast Draw wore a protective suit to shield himself from hot exhaust gases.

When Fast Draw first believed he had joined the G.I. Joe team, he was assigned to guard a top secret missile silo hidden on the Jersey shore, along with two other soldiers. A short time later, a man codenamed Chuckles arrived and told them that they were not really a part of the Joe team. An intelligence agent Chuckles was investigating was covering up the existence of the missile silo. To protect the missile, he reassigned Falcon and the others and told them they were part of the G.I. Joe team. To clear their names, the men "kidnapped" Hawk from the Newark airport and showed him the missile. Meanwhile, a group of Dreadnoks learned of the missile and found out it was aimed at Cobra Island. A brief battle followed, ending when a Cobra helicopter arrived and destroyed the missile just as it launched. Hawk offered Falcon and the others a spot on the Joe team then and there. Fast Draw was one of the many Joes who participated in the Cobra Island civil war on the side of Serpentor. He defended a number of Joes who were trapped on Cobra's airfield during their initial landing. Fast Draw, like most former Joes, is now a reserve member of the current G.I. Joe team. FEEDBACK. The nickname of one of the G.I. Joe team's greenshirt recruits. New recruits were usually given joke nicknames until they earned their Joe codename. After spending weeks of training, Feedback and her fellow "Alpha Team" recruits were sent on a training mission led by Beach Head into a wartorn country to fight a group of rebels. For that mission, Beach Head dropped the greenshirts' nicknames and referred to them only by number, much to their aggravation. Feedback became "One". A battle erupted as the team tried to make it to an extraction chopper after rescuing "Three" (aka Heavy Fire). Beach Head was nearly left behind, but the entire team eventually escaped. (FL 17)

FIFTY. The nickname of one of the G.I. Joe team's greenshirt recruits, Marine Corporal Eddie Shrote. New recruits were usually given joke nicknames until they earned their Joe codename, and Shrote's nickname came from all the push-ups Beach Head disciplined him with. Beach Head didn't seem to like any of the recruits, but he especially disliked Fifty, due to his smart mouth and questioning orders, as well as an unflattering imitation of Beach Head. After spending weeks of training, Fifty and his fellow "Alpha Team" recruits were sent on a training mission led by Beach Head into a wartorn country to fight a group of rebels. For that mission, Beach Head dropped the greenshirts' nicknames and referred to them only by number, much to their aggravation. Fifty became "Four". A battle erupted as the team tried to make it to an extraction chopper after rescuing "Three" (aka Heavy Fire). When Shrote's gun jammed during a firefight, Beach Head ordered him to do push-ups in the midst of the shooting. Beach Head was nearly left behind, but Fifty disobeyed his orders and went back to save him. Beach Head wasn't very grateful, and ordered him to "drop and give me fifty". (FL 17)

FIREFLY

FIREWALL. The code name used by G.I. Joe team recruit Michelle LaChance. While growing up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Firewall had a knack for computers, and once hacked into the high school records of  an enemy, altering her grades so that she was not in the running for class valedictorian. She was never caught, and liked the rush of being able to ruin an uncaring braggart. She continued hacking into computer systems, eventually chaging credit card numbers and bank accounts of government officials. She stayed undetected for some time, until she hacked her way into U.S. Army computers and discovered the Army's experimental nano-mite program. She was arrested by the Feds, but they realized they could make use of her skills and she began working for the government. Firewall was put on temporary assignment with the G.I. Joe team to help put a stop to Cobra's nano-mites. She and fellow hacker, Daemon, both stayed with the team longer, working with the Joes' resident computer expert, Mainframe. The Joes' drill sergeant, Beach Head began running the programmers through a training program should they ever see combat. Firewall stuck to mostly computer work, while Daemon worked to become a soldier. He and Firewall used their skills to assist in several missions, including the fight to stop terrorist Tyler Wingfield. Daemon and Firewall displayed their immaturity when working together, with a relationship like two squabbling siblings. On their first field assignment, Firewall and Daemon helped drive the vehicle carrying a group of children who were revealed to be the clones of Serpentor. The Joes' convoy of vehicles was unexpectedly attacked by the forces of the revived Serpentor, known at The Coil. The main vehicle was torn to pieces and Serpentor arrived to liberate his brothers inside. When Daemon tried to stop him, the former Cobra Emperor grabbed him by the throat and snapped his neck, killing him, and as Firewall and Roadblock looked on in shock. The remaining Joes were taken prisoner and held on Cobra Island until an invasion force arrived to battle The Coil. The battle was won, and the Joes headed home, later having a ceremony for their lost teammates, who included Mainframe. Firewall later assisted Barrel Roll remotely when he hacked into Cobra Island's computer system. Some time later, during a battle against Cobra, Hawk was shot in the back by Cobra Commander and paralyzed. In Hawk's absence, the Jugglers began to take control of the team to reign in it, if not disband it altogether. Eventually, the team's roster was cut down to only a dozen Joes including Firewall. That small team defended the new Pit against Cobra's attack, but Firewall and most of those Joes were quickly reassigned to other units. After the remaining Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Firewall, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. Much of the Joes' current headquarters, The Rock, was designed by Firewall and the late Mainframe. Firewall was called back to work with the team to assist General Colton in his attempt to hack into encrypted files to find Duke's whereabouts. She was still at The Rock when the team was invaded by the Phoenix Guard, a team of U.S. commandos that turned out to be Cobra agents in disguise. The Joes eventually defeated them, but Firewall was severely injured and is now recovering. (GIv2 3, 4, 10, 16, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29, 37, 38, 40; FL 15, 18; AE 15, 19, 20)

FLAGG, GENERAL LAWRENCE J. General Flagg comes from a long line of soldiers, and early in his career, he was the captain of the Army pistol team. In the late 1970s, Flagg saw the need to combat terrorist threats at home and abroad. To do so, he created Special Counter-Terrorist Group Delta, and code-named it "G.I. Joe," after the legendary team of soldiers from the 1960s. Even as Flagg created the team, the terrorist organization known as Cobra Command was rising in power. Flagg placed Colonel Clayton M. Abernathy, code-named "Hawk," in direct field command of the team. While Hawk reported to Flagg, Flagg reported to General Austin. Austin did his best to protect Flagg and the Joes from his superiors, the politically-minded committee of generals known as "The Jugglers." Flagg's strength lay in his ability to know personnel and who the right man for the job was. Flagg was never an arrogant man and was under no delusions about his own abilities. His place was behind a desk making high-level decisions. The military operations and planning for the Joe team rested on Hawk's shoulders, but Flagg was always on hand for support. On occasion, Flagg was personally involved with the team. When Cobra tried to capture the G.I. Joe Mobat tank at the Armed Forces Day Parade in New York, Flagg nearly captured Cobra Commander, but was unwilling to risk the lives of the innocent people in the crowd. A bullet fired by Cobra Commander grazed Flagg's head, but the wound was minor. When Clutch wondered why Flagg didn't shoot the Commander, he answered, "...well, that's why we're the good guys." Months later, General Flagg sent the Joes on a mission into Sierra Gordo which sparked a chase around the world to stop Cobra's plans and find the Cobra courier known as Scar-Face. The Joes took the injured Baroness into The Pit, possibly violating protocol, and Flagg vowed to take full responsibility. Soon after, when Cobra led an assault on The Pit, Flagg tried to stop Major Bludd and Scar-Face from escaping their cell. A struggle ensued and Bludd fatally shot Flagg. Despite Doc's best efforts, he couldn't save the General. A short time later, a ceremony was held and General Flagg was buried at Arlington National Cemetary. Several months later, a newly constructed aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Flagg, was named in his honor. The Flagg became the main naval vessel used by the G.I. Joe team. Today, Sebastian Bludd remains at large and is still wanted by the government for Flagg's murder. (GI 1, 2, 3, 5, 12, 14, 19; BF 1; GI:D 1-3; Figure: 1)

FLASH. The codename used by U.S. Army Sergeant Anthony S. Gambello. As a teenager, Flash played quarterback for his high school team in Lodi, California. After enlistment and his specialized training in Army Electronics School, Chemical School, and Covert Electronics, Flash was assigned to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds' covert electronics division. It was there that he developed a laser rangefinder that caught the attention of General Lawrence Flagg. While recruiting soldiers for inclusion on the newly-forming G.I. Joe team, Flagg arrived at Flash's lab and abruptly asked him ******** Flash was a very logical and methodical person, and was sometimes called "the genius" by his teammates.

Flash was one of the original 13 members of the G.I. Joe team. He was part of many of the Joes' major missions including the rescue of Dr. Adele Burkhart, on which he and Breaker knocked out Cobra's radar station. He was on the first mission in which the Joe team met the Soviets' October Guard. When Cobra attempted to destroy a United States space shuttle, Breaker and Flash became temporary members of the shuttle's crew. In a spacesuit outside the ship, Flash grabbed on to a Cobra missle, forcing it to change course, thus saving the shuttle and its crew. He was involved in many other important operations, as well.

After the re-dedication of G.I. Joe headquarters, aka "The Pit", Flash and many of the other original Joes were taken off active duty. Even so, Flash continued to occasionally participate in missions with the team. He was part of the security team during the Joes' invasion of the Cobra-controlled town of Springfield. During the Cobra Island civil war, Flash was one of the few Joes who were not part of the operation. After the team ended up on the losing side of the war, a group of corrupt generals in the Pentagon denied having any knowledge of the debacle and announced the Joes had gone rogue. When many members of the team were unrightfully arrested, several others including Flash went underground. He and the other Joes who had escaped arrest organized a mission to rescue Hawk and General Hollingsworth when they were arrested for acting without orders and entering the civil war. During the rescue, Hawk and Hollingsworth were cleared of all charges and the corrupt generals responsible were exposed.  Flash was later one of the many Joes involved in training new recruits for the team, and was a member of G.I. Joe until it was disbanded in 1994. Years later, Flash began participating in missions for the reinstated G.I. Joe team, including the mission to stop Tyler Wingfield's terrorist plot. On what was to become his final mission, Flash joined much of the Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. To allow for the start of the invasion, Flash and Mainframe infiltrated a radar station to rig up explosives to destroy the facility. The two Joes were delayed by Serpentor's troops and were unable to get out in time. Flash and Mainframe were both killed in the explosion that followed. Some time later, at Arlington National Cemetary, Flash's name was added to a new memorial dedicated to the fallen members of the G.I. Joe team. FLINT

FOOTLOOSE. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Andrew D. Myers. Growing up, Footloose excelled at whatever he did. He was his senior class valedictorian, captain of the track team and an Eagle Scout. But while studying for his degree in Physical Education, Footloose dropped out of school and became quite weird for about three years, heading off to Venice, California to "find himself". It suddenly came to him one day that his life had no meaning and promptly joined the Army. After basic training and AIT at Fort Benning, he attended jump school and the desert training unit. He eventually joined the G.I. Joe team as an infantry trooper. Upon his arrival on the Joe team, he found himself nervous and on edge due to being quickly thrust into duty, battling Cobra's new Crimson Guard at the Arbco Brothers Circus where the elite Cobras were secretly stationed. A short time later, he and several other Joes stormed a house on Staten Island where an undercover Cobra agent had been living. The discoveries after the raid led the Joes to the Gulf of Mexico and the newly created Cobra Island. Footloose quickly settled into life on the Joe team and participated in many missions, including an undercover mission in Afghanistan to recover a top secret laser cannon from the October Guard, and a near-disastrous mission to capture a Soviet scientist in Southeast Asia. Later, Footloose served as part of the security detail at the Joes' secret facility at the Presidio in San Francisco. Years later, Footloose eventually joined the reinstated Joe team in its invasion of Cobra Island to battle the forces of a revived Serpentor. After the Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Footloose, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. FOURNIER, SERGEANT. A sergeant with the Canadian Mounted Police. Fournier and his colleague, Inspector Cates, worked with members of the G.I. Joe team to investigate the shipment of Cobra Terror-Drome components to Montreal. After a firefight in the city's warehouse district, the men tracked down Cobra's potential buyers to the remote Abitibi territory of Northern Quebec. They discovered the shipments originated in Denver, where the presumed-dead Cobra Commander was readying to return to Cobra. (GI 97, 98)

FRED I. The first Crimson Guardsman known as Fred Broca was one of many identical Cobra agents sharing his name. Virtually nothing is known of Fred's past, and it is unknown if the other Freds were patterned after him, or if he, too underwent plastic surgery to give him a new face. Fred, his wife and two children -- Shaun and Heather -- were one of the first undercover Crimson Guard families, living like the average suburban Americans. Fred was sent to Staten Island, where the Brocas moved into a new home just outside the gates of Fort Wadsworth, an Army base Cobra believed to be connected to the Joes. The base was, in fact, the home of The Pit. After weeks of surveillance, Fred was surprised when Destro and Firefly arrived at his house. He joined them in their attempt to find Snake-Eyes at his cabin in the High Sierras. The Cobra agents found the cabin and opened fire as they stormed the cabin. Luckily for Snake-Eyes, Spirit and Airborned were nearby and a fierce battle erupted, leading to the destruction of the cabin. As they fought, Spirit shot Fred, who stumbled off into the snow. Fred's body was found a short time later by the Joes, after the Crimson Guardsman bled to death. Fred's body was laid to rest underneath a waterfall near the site of Snake-Eyes cabin. His gun was laid across his chest, his epitaph carved in the stone behind him: "Here lies Fred. Whatever he did in life, he died well." Not long after his death, the Brocas were surprised to see Fred return home. But despite having Fred's face, they knew it wasn't him. Cobra had simply replaced him to continue the surveillance of Fort Wadsworth. Fred II was in reality a Vietnam veteran named Wade Collins, an old friend of Snake-Eyes, Stalker and Storm Shadow. FRED VII

FRED VIII. A member of the Fred series of Cobra's elite Crimson Guard, Fred VIII shared the same face of every other Fred through plastic surgery. Fred VIII was keeping the previous Fred -- Fred VII -- under surveillance during his dealings with Cobra Commander. After Fred VIII witnessed his traitorous fellow Guardsman shoot Cobra Commander and carry the Commander's seemingly lifeless body into the woods near Denver and bury it, he allowed the traitor to leave, then dug up the Commander. He was not as lifeless as it first appeared, and Fred VIII -- with the help of the network of Freds -- saw that the Commander received the surgery he needed to survive his wounds. For the next few years, the presumed-dead Cobra Commander built a new business from the ground up as he had onece before and eventually returned to reclaim Cobra. Fred VIII was one of the many loyal Seigies (C.G.'s) who stood alongside the Commander as he revealed to his followers that he had returned. (GI 98)

FRED LXV. A member of the Fred series of the Crimson Guard, Fred LXV shared the same face of every other Fred through plastic surgery. Fred was stationed in Broca Beach when his wife informed him their son was on drugs and had bought it right in the local convenience store. Fred retrieved his rifle and angrily confronted the head of the drug operation, Headman, and was swiftly shot and killed by the Headman's Headhunters. Headman was confident that he could continue his business since Cobra would never call in law enforcement to their secretly controlled town. Fred's wife was killed when she tried to avenge her husband's death. Their son, Fred Junior, did not seek his own revenge, but instead went to the next town over and tried to trade his mother's rifle for more drugs. (GI 123-125)

FREEDOM. An American bald eagle who was occasionally the companion of G.I. Joe team member, Spirit. Many observed that Spirit seemed to communicate with Freedom. (GI 140)

FREEN, WENDELL. The owner of the company, Nexus-Tech. The company was one of the United States' defense contractors and produced missile guidance systems. Freen had been overbilling the government for many years and was afraid the truth was about to be discovered. He made a deal with Cobra and staged a fake hostage situation, complete with terrorists that were really BATs in disguise. Cobra agents posed as hostages and were to erase Nexus-Tech's records to keep Freen's deception a secret. (SM 17)

FROSTBITE. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Farley S. Seward. Born in Galena, Alaska, Frostbite was used to cold temperatures. He worked briefly as a lineman on the Alaskan pipeline, but found it unchallenging despite to freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions. He found challenging work in the Army. Frostbite graduated from transportation school at Fort Ustis and armored school at Fort Knox. He also became a skilled mechanic. On the G.I. Joe team, he drove the Snow Cat arctic assault half-track. Among his missions for the team, Frostbite fought to free the small nation of Frusenland from Cobra when their Terror-Dromes there activiated their paranoia waves and plunged the nation into chaos. Frostbite and the others were even affected by the paranoia waves for a time before shutting them down with help from Battle Force 2000. On another mission, Frostbite and a small team of Joes teamed up with the Soviets' October Guard to destroy a Terror-Drome hidden beneath the ice near the border between Alaska and the U.S.S.R. The Joe team was disbanded in 1994, but was later reinstated in 2001. A year after, Frostbite rejoined the team, tracking down a smuggled nuclear device at the U.S.-Canada border. He later headed to the Arctic circle to investigate a secret laboratory where experiments had gone wrong and fought the mutated humans trapped inside. Some time later Frostbite headed into Tibet as backup for a team investigating a hidden Red Ninja retreat where Cobra Commander and Storm Shadow had been hiding. Some time later, after the Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Frostbite, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team.
