| GAMAL, PROFESSOR. One
of the
leaders of the revolutionary Royalists, trying to overthrow the Middle
Eastern dictator Colonel Sharif and return the Emir to power. Gamal led
a small group of Royalists. With the help of G.I. Joe team members
Dusty
and Mainframe, Gamal staged a successful ambush of one of Sharif's
desert
convoys. In return for their help, Gamal provided the Joes with
transportation
-- a motorcycle -- and a guide -- a young Royalist named Rashid. (GI

| GENGHIS. One of ten clones
created by Dr.
Mindbender when trying to create Serpentor, named for Genghis Khan. The
ten young clones would grow at a slower rate than normal, and
Mindbender
nearly abandoned them once he perfected the process to create the
mature
clone that became Serpentor, but instead placed them in stasis and left
them alive unbeknownst to Cobra Commander. Each clone was the
amalgamation
of history's greatest soldiers. After the defeat of Cobra in the 1995,
the U.S. government raided Mindbender's secret lab on Cobra Island and
recovered the clone children. They were placed in foster care until
Serpentor
and Dr. Mindbender gathered them in secrecy. All the children joined
Serpentor
on Cobra Island during a battle between his forces and Cobra and G.I.
Joe.
After the battle, Genghis and the other boys were again placed in the
care
of the government. (GIv2 24, 25) |
GHOSTRIDER.
The
code name used by U.S. Air Force Captain Jonas S. Jeffries. Ever since
his childhood in Chicago, Ghostrider has made a point to not be
noticed.
After joining the Air Force, he became an aeronautical engineer and
became
a skilled and fearless pilot. That fearless nature was needed for
flying
a stealth fighter, which required very low-altitude "nap of the earth"
flying without activating sensors or guidance systems. Ghostrider
joined
the Joes in 1988 when he was chosen to fly the Phantom X-19 stealth
fighter.
The other Joes could never seem to remember his code name, and referred
to him as "what's his name" among themselves and often called him
"Stealthy"
or some other nickname, embarrassed to admit they forgot his name. On
his
first mission with the Joes, Ghostrider knocked out Cobra Island's
radar
system during the Joes' participation in the Cobra civil war. While the
combination of his low flying and radar-eluding jet got him to the
island
virtually undetected, he was spotted by two underwater Cobra BUGG
vehicles,
but he destroyed the subs before they could transmit his location. His
success enabled the Joes to land a reinforcements on the island
undetected.
He later participated in the defense of a volcanic island that emerged
from the ocean in the Gulf of Mexico. Cobra was trying to occupy the
island
and the Joes wanted to push them off. In the end, the island sunk back
beneath the sea on its own. A short time later, Ghostrider returned to
Cobra Island. While a large group of G.I. Joe aircraft distracted
Cobra's
defenses while the stealth pilot snapped pictures of cargo on the
island's
airfield. To get the best angle for taking the photos, Ghostrider had
to
buzz the control tower. Some time later, he fought Cobra fighters over
the nation of Punta del Mucosa. During the Joes biggest operation to
date,
the Battle of Benzheen, Ghostrider flew deep into enemy territory to
snap
spy photos of a Cobra Terror-Drome launch base. With Slip-Stream as his
co-pilot, he braved anti-aircraft fire to complete the mission. The two
pilots were hit by enemy fire and barely survived after crash-landing
their
fighter on the deck of the U.S.S. Flagg. The mission was a
success
but the loss of the fighter upset both Joes. Ghostrider,
like most former Joes, is currently a reserve member of the team. Ghostrider's
code name was never mentioned in any of the
comics besides one mention on the letter page. Supposedly, this was to
avoid any confusion with the Marvel Comics character "Ghost Rider".

| GIBBS, GENERAL. A leading
member of
the
committee of Generals known as "the Jugglers", during the time of the
G.I.
Joe team's reinstatement. Gibbs presided over the group when it decided
to execute the clone children who were genetically identical to
Serpentor
before the forces of the revived Serpentor recsued them from a G.I. Joe
convoy. Gibbs was also reluctant to send the Joes in to invade
Serpentor's
base of operations on Cobra Island, but was overruled when the state
department
authorized the mission. In the wake of that battle, Gibbs quietly
hatched a plan to advance his yet to be revealed secret agenda. He made
contact with Serpentor's second-in-command, Overlord, to recover
Serpentor's nearly-lifeless body from Cobra Island. Gibbs then let a
number of Jugglers in on his plan, explaining that he hoping to
manipulate Serpentor in a laboratory, "re-educating" the former Cobra
emperor so he can be controlled. Overlord agreed to go to work as an
assassin in exchange for the technology to revive his leader. Gibbs
also made a deal with Cobra agents Tomax and Xamot to give Cobra Island
to their legitimate corporation, Extensive Enterprises, and by
extension, Cobra. After the Joe's commander, Hawk was shot by Cobra and
left paralyzed, Gibbs has attempted to take control of the weakened
G.I. Joe team to either use for his own purposes or disband it all
together. General Gibbs' ultimate goal and final plans for Serpentor,
Overlord, Cobra Island and G.I. Joe have yet to be revealed. (GIv2

JOE |
GNAWGAHYDE.
Gnawgahyde was a poacher in
Africa before being run off the continent by fellow poachers for
cheating
at cards, not to mention being obnoxious and smelling bad. With little
income left from his poaching, he was recruited by the Dreadnoks. As a
poacher, Gnawgahyde has been known to go for weeks without bathing so
as
not to give off too human a scent due to soap he may use, and eats
whatever
he can in the wild so the animals won't smell the additives in
processed
foods. He has been known to grease himself with hog fat to finally
erase
all human scent. Gnawgayhde did not spend time with the other Dreadnoks
who had gone to America with Zartan until the group expanded to become
an organized, national biker gang. The entire Dreadnok organization
began
working for Cobra, and on orders from Tomax and Xamot, Gnawgahyde and
other
Dreadnoks attacked Roadblock while the Joe was taping his television
cooking
show in Los Angeles. He later joined Cobra in the fight against the
forces
of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. (GIv2

| GOMOROV, LIEUTENANT. An officer
in the
Russian Spetsnaz 2nd Brigade -- a group of elite commandos -- who was
captured
by Afghani rebels along with Sergeant Orlov and Private Pritkin. They
were
"rescued" from the Afghanis by Joes Falcon, Psyche-Out and Slip-Stream,
who were all posing as soviet troops. Though Gomorov and the others
kept
it from the Joes, they knew they were Americans in disguise. The Joes
sent
the Soviets to rescue a captured CIA operative in Iran, so the United
States
would not be blamed for the rescue. Gomorov decided to let his men
complete
the mission. In the end, he and the others sent the CIA agent to the
Joes,
but made their own escape back to Soviet territory. (SM

| GOODFELLOW, CHIP. A
representative of the
North American Banana Monopoly (NABM), a corporation known for often
exploiting
third world nations like Sierra Gordo. During the country's civil war,
the NABM backed the rogue General Villavaca, who decided to get in on
the
war and created a third faction. Goodfellow represented the NABM's
interests
and was often by Villavaca's side during the civil war. Goodfellow
assisted
Villavaca in his purchase of weapons from Destro's company, MARS. A
slick,
well-dressed businessman, the arrogant Goodfellow seemed to enjoy
helping
wage the war for his share of the profits. When a team of Joes left the
wartorn country with the American ambassador and documents that would
prove
embarrassing for the NABM, Goodfellow informed the General that they
would
no longer support his revolution. He then emptied cash from the NABM
office's
safes into a briefcase and prepared his seaplane for takeoff to get out
of the country as it collapsed into chaos. A group of Joes, Dreadnoks
and
refugees were trying to escape Sierra Gordo, as well, and stole
Goodfellow's
plane to do so. Once in the air, Goodfellow emerged from the rear cabin
with a machine gun and his briefcase, telling the Joes to change
course.
He didn't expect to contend with an aggravated Thrasher, who had
suffered
a number of injuries including a broken nose. Goodfellow's ultimatum
was
the last straw, and hoping to get some air in the cabin, Thrasher
knocked
him down and kicked open the door. Goodfellow and his briefcase full of
money were sucked out of the plane somewhere over Central America. (GI 69-71) |
| GORKY, LT. Mikhail P. Gorky was
born in
Arkhangelsk in Soviet Russia and joined the Soviet Navy at an early
age.
He eventually made his way to the Black Sea regiment of the Naval
Infantry,
considered to the Soviet equivalent of the Navy SEALs. Only years
before
the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Gorky was assigned to the October
Guard after many of the team's original members were killed in action.
By this time, the Guard and G.I. Joe were on good terms, and Gorky
first
met up with the team on a joint mission into Sierra Gordo to fight the
Iron Grenadiers. On that mission, Gorky developed a mild crush on Lady
Jaye, which didn't sit well with Flint or the other new Guard member,
Sergeant
Mischa, who thought Gorky was getting distracted. Gorky proved he
wasn't
so easily distracted and finished the mission as the group teamed up
with
some of the country's native Tucaros to fight the Grenadiers. After the
fall of the Soviet Union, the October Guard was disbanded, but its
former
members often worked together. Under Russian Colonel Red Star, Gorky
and
the rest of the Guard headed off into space on a mission with the Joes.
Once back with the Russian Navy, Gorky's unit came under the command of
corrupt officers, who got involved in illegal activities as the chaos
after
the end of Soviet rule settled in. Gorky was reluctantly drawn into
this
corruption. When Gorky joined a team led by Daina assisting the G.I.
Joe
team and Destro's Iron Grenadiers in rescuing Flint and the Baroness
from
mobsters in the Czech Republic, he betrayed Daina and his former allies
by helping the mobsters prevent their prisoners -- now including Daina
and some Joes -- from escaping. The rest of the Joes's rescue team
arrived
along with Destro, whose Iron Grenadiers fired on Gorky and his
accomplices.
Daina was shocked at what her comrade had done, and as he lay dying in
her arms, he told her he got in over his head and couldn't escape the
corruption
around him, but hoped the Joes would win in the end. Soon after, Daina
visited Gorky's grave, believing that deep down, Gorky had still been a
good man. (GI 101-105, 146-148; GIv2 17-19;

![]() GRAND
SLAM. The codename used by U.S. Army Sergeant James Barney.
Since
he was a child growing up in Wisconsin, Grand Slam loved to read comic
books and was a fan of science fiction. Soft-spoken and calm, Grand
Slam
was fascinated with science and technology and studied to become an
electronics
engineer. Once he joined the army he became interested in much of the
advanced
military technology that was being developed. He entered Special
Weapons
School (graduating top of his class) and Advanced Technology School.
While taking part in artillery training exercises, Grand Slam was given
the task of using a mortar to fire on targets a specific distance away,
but the sergeant in charge forced he and his fellow trainees to do so
without the use of calculators or electronics of any kind. This worried
many of the other soldiers, but Grand Slam simply used a map, compass,
and other more traditional tools, did the math on his own and managed
to score a direct hit. Observing the exercise was Colonel Clayton
"Hawk" Abernathy. Grand Slam expected to be commended by Hawk, but was
instead scolded for not double-checking his calculations before firing.
Despite that unexpected reaction, Hawk later assigned Grand Slam to the
newly-forming G.I. Joe team.Once on the team, Grand Slam became an expert with the "HAL" Heavy Artillery Laser and the "JUMP" jet pack. He played a major role in many of the Joes' most important early missions, including the rescue of Dr. Adele Burkhart from Cobra. Months later, after a battle in Washington, DC, Cobra agent Major Bludd was on the run from the Joes and being pursued by Grand Slam and Stalker on the RAM motorcycle. Bludd hijacked a bus full of civilians to make his escape. To stop him, Grand Slam told Stalker to take control of the RAM as Grand Slam climbed onto the moving bus. He swung down from the bus's roof, kicking through the glass window and knocked Bludd to the ground. After the ensuing fight, Grand Slam walked away without a scratch while Major Bludd ended up in the hospital. After the re-dedication of G.I. Joe
headquarters,
aka "The Pit", Grand Slam and many of the other original Joes were
taken
off active duty. Even so, Grand Slam continued to occasionally
participate
in missions with the team, and he began to be involved in research and
development for the Joe team's high-tech weapons and vehicles. After
one
such weapons testing missions in the desert, the group of Joes joined a
convoy being led
by Hawk and were attacked by Cobra agents. Later, the Joe team was on
the losing
side of the Cobra Island civil war. A group of corrupt generals in the
Pentagon denied having any knowledge of the debacle and announced the
Joes had gone rogue. When many members
of the team were unrightfully arrested, several other Joes including
Grand Slam went underground. He and the other Joes who had escaped
arrest
organized a mission to rescue Hawk and General Hollingsworth when they
were arrested for acting without orders and entering the civil war.
During
the rescue, Hawk and Hollingsworth were cleared of all charges and the
corrupt generals responsible were exposed. Later, Grand Slam was
assigned
to training and choosing potential members of the Joe team. On a
training
mission with three new Joes -- Budo, Repeater and Lightfoot -- Grand
Slam
was seriously wounded. Fortunately, the new Joes completed the mission
and Grand Slam recovered soon afterward. Grand Slam's subsequent
missions for the team mostly included
training and research & development, but he stayed with G.I. Joe
until
it was disbanded in 1994. Grand Slam was later called back to join the
reinstated Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived
Serpentor
on Cobra Island and remained with the team in the wake of that battle.
He was one of the Joes assigned to Blackwater Prison to guard prisoners
Scrap-Iron and Major Bludd when the mercenary known as Wraith staged a
jailbreak and freed the Cobra agents. Some time later, during a
battle against Cobra, Hawk was
shot in the back by Cobra Commander and paralyzed. In Hawk's absence,
the Jugglers began to take control of the team to reign in it, if
not disband it altogether. Eventually, the team's roster was cut down
to
only a dozen Joes including Grand Slam. That small team defended the
new
Pit against Cobra's attack, but Grand Slam and most of those Joes were
quickly reassigned to other units. After the remaining Joes stopped a
plot by
Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new
threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One
year later, the Joe
team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Grand Slam,
like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. (GI

| GREGOR. A guard at a rebel
stronghold in
the nation of Sierra Gordo. Gregor was one of two snipers stationed in
the stronghold's guard tower when the G.I. Joe team attempted to rescue
Dr. Adele Burkhart from the rebels. During a brief firefight, Gregor
and
another sniper named Dimitri shot and killed two Tucaro tribesman who
were
helping the Joes. The rescue was successful and the Joes fled into the
jungle. Gregor and Dimitri followed the Joes into the jungle. They were
apparently killed by Recondo when the Joe backtracked to see if they
were
being followed. Recondo may have been seeking revenge for the Tucaros,
whom he had lived among for months. He threw the guards' rifles in the
river as a sacrifice to the river spirits the Tucaros believed in. (GI

Minneapolis
who witnessed a battle at Manhattan's Battery Park Marina between a
group
of Joes and Cobra Mamba helicopters led by Destro, a short time after
the

entire
fight on his video camera. The tape was nearly aired by a local news
crew
before "G.I. Joe" Colton disconnected the video feed in the interests
of
national security. (FL 2) |
