HACKER.
The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Jesse E. Jordan, from
Emmetsburg,
Iowa. Hacker was a computer specialist at Fort Leonard Wood repairing
the
mainframe that handle personnel records when he heard the G.I. Joe team
was looking for new members. He hacked into the Pentagon's computers
and
put his name at the top of the candidate list. General Hawk thought he
was being sloppy, but Hacker was just trying to get Hawk's attention,
and
gave him a disk containing the general's high school records including
copies of detention slips. After spending some time as one of the Joes'
"greenshirt" recruits, Hacker graduated to full member status as the
Joes'
information retrieval specialist. On his first mission, he joined the
team
in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra
Island. Hacker later assisted Barrel Roll remotely when he hacked
into Cobra Island's computer system. (GIv2

| HANNIBAL. One of ten clones
created by
Dr. Mindbender when trying to create Serpentor. The ten young clones
would
grow at a slower rate than normal, and Mindbender nearly abandoned them
once he perfected the process to create the mature clone that became
Serpentor,
but instead placed them in stasis and left them alive unbeknownst to
Cobra
Commander. Each clone was the amalgamation of history's greatest
soldiers.
After the defeat of Cobra in the 1995, the U.S. government raided
Mindbender's
secret lab on Cobra Island and recovered the clone children. They were
place in foster care until Serpentor and Dr. Mindbender gathered them
in
secrecy. Hannibal -- named for the ancient general -- had been grown at
an accelerated rate by Mindbender, and looked to be in his late teens,
much older than the other nine clones who appeared identical in age.
Hannibal
was the first of these cloones to come in contact with Dr. Mindbender,
and abducted two of his younger "brothers" from their foster homes. A
team
of Joes were investigating the boys' disappearance and tracked down
Hannibal
and the others, but the boys escaped. The young clones all had a kind
of
psychic connection to each other. All the children joined Serpentor on
Cobra Island during a battle between his forces, Cobra and G.I. Joe.
After
the battle, Hannibal and the other boys were again placed in the care
of
the government. (GIv2 16, 22-25; Figure: 1) |
| HANS. A neo-Nazi protecting
the former
Nazi officer, Dr. Otto Totenschadel, when he was living in exile in
South
America. The G.I. Joe team was sent to make a deal with Totenschadel,
asking
for his help in stopping a crashed bomber full of poison gas from
leaking
into the ocean. In return they would protect him from the Israelis who
wanted him dead. When the Joes revealed to Hans and others that
Totenschadel
had lied and had actually betrayed the crew of another Nazi plane
carrying
gold and stole the precious metal to fund his secret retirement. Hans
and
another guard named Eugen killed the Doctor after learning of his
betrayal. (SM 2) |
HARDBALL. The
code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Wilmer S. Duggleby. Born in
Cooperstown,
New York -- home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame -- it wasn't
surprising
that he became a centerfielder in the minor leagues. After playing
there
for five years, Hardball realized the big league scouts weren't
interested
in bringing him up to the majors, looking for a star player and not the
hardworking team player Hardball was. He joined the Army and began
training
in the use of advanced grenade launchers, finding a similarity between
throwing a baseball and launching a grenade. He eventually made his way
to the G.I. Joe team. On his first mission with the Joes, Hardball was
part of another mission to stop Cobra from claiming a newly created
island
in the Gulf of Mexico. Hardball and a group of new Joes led by and
Ripcord
and Outback defeated Cobra's forces, only to have the unstable island
sink
back beneath the ocean. Some time later, Hardball and a team of Joes
stormed
the offices of Nexus Tech -- a software company contracted by the
government
-- to foil a hostage situation. The mission was successful, but it
turned
out that the hostages and terrorists all worked for Cobra, who had made
a deal with the company's owner to cover up documents that proved he
was
cheating the government for years. Hardball's baseball skills came to
play
when he "pitched" a grenade during the Joes' fight to stop Cobra from
kidnapping
the President at a major league baseball game. A short time later,
Hardball
manned a turret in the Mean Dog attack vehicle, battling Cobra on a
highway
near Broca Beach, New Jersey. Hardball worked with the Joes until the
team
was shut down in 1994. Hardball was later called back to join the
reinstated
Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on
Cobra
Island, and has remained with the team in the wake of that battle. (GI

HARDTOP. The
code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Nicholas D. Klas. Hardtop was born
in Chicago, where he later became a heavy equipment operator. After he
joined the Army, Hardtop also studied electronics and later worked with
the G.I. Joe team driving the immense crawler vehicle that served as
the
mobile launch base for the Joe team's space shuttle Defiant.
Hardtop
worked closely with the shuttle's commander, Payload, who learned that
Hardtop was a perfect example of the strong silent type. He focused
primarily
on doing his job and wasn't a talkative person. Hardtop and Payload
began
working with the Joes as their headquarters in Utah was being
constructed.
The Defiant's first mission came shortly after that. Over the
next
several years, Hardtop worked with the Joe team on and off, helping in
launching various shuttle missions. He last worked for the team shortly
before they were shut down in 1994, sending the Joes' Star Brigade on
their
first joint mission with former members of the October Guard. (GI

with the
reinstated Joes' Skystriker squadron led by Ace in the battle against
Serpentor's
forces on Cobra Island. Harrison spotted Serpentor on a hill top
surveying
the battle and tried to crash his fighter and kill him, ejecting at the
last second. His enthusiasm got the better of him, though and the
crashing
plane missed Serpentor's position. (GIv2

| HASSELL, BRIAN. An
undercover Cobra agent
who worked for the U.S. State Department. Hassell infiltrated the State
Department and became a U.S. ambassador. He was to be the U.S.
representative
in peace talks with the Middle Eastern nation of Al-Alawi, and intended
to assassinate Al-Alawi's ambassador. Hassell was escorted to the peace
talks by Clutch and Scarlett. After arriving at the peace talks, the
Joes
learned the truth and were locked away by Hassell. Scarlett broke free
and arrived just seconds before she could stop Hassell from shooting
the
ambassador. To Hassell's surprise, the ambassador got up after being
shot
and slapped him. He had been wearing a bullet-proof vest. (GI

| HEADMAN. The drug kingpin known
as Headman
got his start robbing old ladies for their social security checks, then
moved on to robbing convenience stores. In prison, he learned the ropes
of drug dealing and started selling after his release. He set out to
create
a drug empire patterned after organized paramilitary groups, and
eventually
turned the dealers who worked with him into "Headhunters", outfitting
them
with uniforms that hid their faces. Headman himself wore a simple mask
over his eyes and dressed in a pinstriped, double-breasted suit
inspired
by old time mobsters like Al Capone. Headman was about to set up his
operation
in Broca Beach, New Jersey, never realizing the town was controlled by
Cobra. A Crimson Guardsman from the Fred Series was killed when he
confronted
Headman about his son's addiction. Eventually, the G.I. Joe Drug
Elimination
Force (DEF) arrived and fought Headman and his Headhunters. Headman,
defeated,
fled the town and escaped the Joes. He headed to pick up a new shipment
on the waterfront and was pursued by the DEF. He was finally stopped
when
Cobra Commander, using the government's hidden laser facility in
Manhattan,
destroyed his boat. The Joes, never having discovered Broca Beach
belonged
to Cobra, wondered why Cobra Commander had helped, but they were still
happy to finally arrest Headman and put him behind bars. (GI

HEART-WRENCHER.
One of the few women to become Dreadnoks, Heart-Wrencher was first seen
as a member of Zartan's organized, expanded Dreadnok organization, some
time after the break up of Cobra in 1995. Little is known about her
past. Her nickname is an appropriate one, since she is often seen
wielding a huge wrench as a weapon. After the entire Dreadnok
organization had begun working for Cobra, Heart-Wrencher and other
Dreadnoks attacked Roadblock while the Joe was taping his television
cooking show in Los Angeles, on orders from Tomax and Xamot. She later
joined Cobra in the fight against the forces of a revived Serpentor on
Cobra Island, and continues to be included in many of the Dreadnoks'
biggest operations. (GIv2 24, 25, 31, 36, 38; FL 18) |
HEAVY
DUTY. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Lamont A.
Morris.
Growing up in Chicago, Heavy Duty surprised his parents when he
developed
a love of classical music. He even became an accomplished classical
guitarist.
When he enlisted at age eighteen, Heavy Duty became skilled at
operating
the Man-Portable Heavy Weapons System, finding it required the same
skills
as playing the guitar: left hand/right hand coordination and the
ability
to concentrate on simultaneous multiple tasks. Heavy Duty eventually
became
a member of the G.I. Joe team, serving with the team in the final years
before its shutdown in 1994. Among his many missions, he helped defend
the Pit in Utah from a surprise invasion by Cobra Commander and his
troops.
After the team was disbanded, Heavy Duty returned home to Chicago where
he opened a small in-home recording studio. When the Joe team was
reinstated
in 2001, Heavy Duty rejoined the team, and fought a highly-advanced
Cobra
BAT in the streets of his hometown, Chicago. He was later one of the
many
Joes involved in an invasion of Cobra Island to battle the forces of a
revived Serpentor. (GI 130, 131; GIv2 11-14, 23-26; BF 1; Figures: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) |
| HEAVY FIRE. The nickname of one
of the
G.I. Joe team's greenshirt recruits. New recruits are usually given
joke
nicknames until they earn their Joe codename. After spending weeks of
training,
Feedback and his fellow "Alpha Team" recruits were sent on a training
mission
led by Beach Head into a wartorn country to fight a group of rebels.
For
that mission, Beach Head dropped the greenshirts' nicknames and
referred
to them only by number, much to their aggravation. Heavy Fire became
"Three".
A battle erupted with dozens of rebels, and Heavy Fire was wounded as
the
Joes ran for cover in a nearby building. He fell behind, and instead of
going back for him, Beach Head left him behind. This upset the whole
team,
but Beach Head knew that Heavy Fire would be held for interrogation and
he led the team to rescue him in the local police station. As the team
tried to make it to an extraction chopper after rescuing Heavy Fire,
Beach
Head was nearly left behind, but the entire team eventually escaped. (FL

HEAVY
METAL. The code name used by U.S. Army Corporal Sherman R.
Guderian.
Growing up poor in Brooklyn, New York, Heavy Metal looked for a way to
get out of poverty. He enlisted in the Army to go to Finance School,
his
goal to become a CPA. But after watching a column of tanks roll by at
Fort
Belvoir, he was never the same again. He transferred to Armor and was
trained
in the use of the Army's most advanced tanks. He was eventually
assigned
to the G.I. Joe team to drive the new MBT Mauler tank. On Heavy Metal's
last training mission before joining the Joes in the desert outside of
Las Vegas, he and several other new recruits led by Lady Jaye were
ambushed
by a group of Cobra's Battle Android Troopers. The BATs ran straight
into
the Joe vehicles as they headed down the highway. When they collided,
canisters
on their backs broke open, releasing Dr. Mindbender's creeper vines.
The
fast-growing vines clogged the vehicles' wheels and released a sleeping
gas that knocked out the Joes. When they awoke they were trapped in a
junkyard
maze and forced to fight more BATs and the vines. Heavy Metal and the
others
eventually found a way to defeat the vines without weapons and sent
Cobra
into retreat. Heavy Metal and the Mauler later participated in the
Battle
of Springfield, when nearly the entire Joe team invaded the
Cobra-controlled
town. Upon returning from that mission, the Joes discovered that their
prisoner, Zartan, had escaped with the help of the Dreadnoks. Heavy
Metal
and other Joes tracked them to the New Jersey swamps where they were
taken
by surprise by the arrival of the Dreadnoks' Thunder Machine, which
allowing
the mercenaries to escape. Heavy Metal continued his work on the team
for
years, participating in many missions, including the Joes' involvement
in the Cobra Island civil war. Heavy Metal's final mission began as a
supposedly
simple raid on Cobra Terror-Dromes in the desert nation of Trucial
Abysmia.
The mission went sour when the Joes stumbled upon a large contingent of
Cobra soldiers and vehicles. Heavy Metal's Mauler was one of the
vehicles
that was destroyed, though all onboard bailed out beforehand. The team
was captured and held prisoner by Cobra. A SAW-Viper, misunderstanding
orders, killed several of the Joes in cold blood. Heavy Metal was one
of
the first. He and his fellow Joes were given heroes' funerals in
Arlington
National Cemetery. Heavy
Metal's file name -- "Sherman Guderian" -- is named for the Sherman
tank
and the German General Heinz Guderian, famous for leading his
tank
divisions in the Nazi invasion of Moscow during World War II. (GI

HIT
& RUN. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Brent
Scott.
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Hit & Run was orphaned at the age of
three
by a drunken driver. He grew up in a county institution, from which he
often escaped by climbing down sheer walls and running for miles. He
explained
that he wasn't running away, he was "practicing". He enlisted in the
Army
once he left the custody of the county. Hit & Run became known as a
fast runner, and became skilled at mountaineering. He was eventually
assigned
to the G.I. Joe team. On his first mission for the team, he and several
other new recruits fought to keep Cobra from claiming a newly-formed
island
not far from the original Cobra Island. They barely stopped Cobra
before
the entire land mass sunk back beneath the ocean. Some time later, Hit
& Run and a team of Joes stormed the offices of Nexus Tech -- a
software
company contracted by the government -- to foil a hostage situation.
The
mission was successful, but it turned out that the hostages and
terrorists
all worked for Cobra, who had made a deal with the company's owner to
cover
up documents that proved he was cheating the government for years. Hit
& Run's missions over the next few years included a mission to free
a family being held hostage in their home in rural Iowa, and a battle
with
Iron Grenadiers in the jungles of Sierra Gordo. Hit & Run served on
many more missions for G.I. Joe until the team was disbanded in 1994.
He
was later called back to join the reinstated Joe team in its battle
against
the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. (GI

HOLLINGSWORTH,
GENERAL. A U.S. Army General who often served as an advisor
to Hawk and the G.I. Joe team. Hollingsworth's first direct involvement
with the Joes was during the Joes suspension following the Battle of
Springfield.
He, General Ryan and Admiral Dyson all arrived at the Pit to conduct an
investigation, along with Hawk. The officers were alone in Joe
headquarters
when Cobra launched an attack. The four men heavily armed themselves
and
fought back against the invading BATs, and later a group of Vipers led
by Cobra Commander and Destro. During the fighting, Ryan and Dyson both
gave their lives to allow the others time to escape and to destroy the
Pit before it fell into enemy hands. Having witnessed the threat of
Cobra
first hand, Hollingsworth immediately reinstated the Joe team, advising
them on occasion. When Cobra stole the government's top secret
electronic
"black box" from Joe headquarters, Hollingsworth warned Hawk that
government
officials would ruin Hawk if he didn't retrieve the black box, and
suggested
he send a small recon team into Cobra Island before attempting to
retrieve
it. As the Joes arrived on the island, Cobra's civil war had just
begun.
When Dr. Mindbender made a deal with the United States on behalf of
Serpentor,
it was Hollingsworth who organized the Joes involvement in the civil
war
on Serpentor's side. He gathered up much of the team without Hawk's
knowledge
and brought them to the U.S.S. Flagg before the Joes landed on
the
island. When the battle ended embarrassingly for the Joes thanks to
Cobra's
last minute deal making, the committee of generals who oversaw the Joes
-- the Jugglers -- decided to disavow any knowledge of the incident and
blamed it all on Hawk and Hollingsworth, claiming they acted without
authorization.
The two men were arrested and placed under psychiatric care at a small
hospital in Virginia. Meanwhile, most of the Joes involved on Cobra
Island
were taken into custody, as well. Hollingsworth and Hawk could do
nothing,
but didn't have to thanks to the arrival of the remaining members of
the
Joe team, who went underground when their teammates were arrested. They
staged a rescue operation, and freed their commanders, while at the
same
time exposing the Jugglers' cover-up. Hollingsworth's reputation was
hurt
somewhat by the incident and he even served as one of the Jugglers for
a short time. General Hollingsworth advised the Joes on many more
occasions,
until the team was shut down in 1994. He has had no contact with the
Joes
when the team was reinstated in 2001. Due
to some apparent art and coloring errors, Hollingsworth appears as both
a white man and black man, as well as being in the Army and the Air
Force.
Larry Hama has said that Hollingsworth was always intended to be a
black
man and an Army officer. (GI 53, 73, 74, 77, 78, 99, 101) |
HOT
SEAT. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant First Class
Michael
A. Provost, from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Hot Seat could have been a
heavyweight
contender due to his left jab, quick reflexes and tactical mind.
Fearing
a lack of job security and the probability of permanent brain damage,
he
stopped boxing and enlisted in the Army. Hot Seat became skilled with
operating
various armored vehicles, and was also trained as a drill instructor.
He
joined the G.I. Joe team to become the primary driver of the Raider
fighting
vehicle. Hot Seat's first mission was in Sierra Gordo, where he helped
a team of Joes, October Guard and Tucaro tribesman in battling Destro's
Iron Grenadiers. He next participated in the Battle of Benzheen,
driving
his Raider among the Joes' armored column. Hot Seat joined the Joes in
many other missions before the team was shut down in 1994. (GI
