KEEL-HAUL.
The
code name used by U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Everett P. Colby, commander of
the aircraft carrier
U.S.S. Flagg. A native of Charlottesville,
Virginia, Colby attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and the Navy
Flight School. During the 1960s, he made a name for himself flying Phantom
F-4 fighter jets. After his time as a fighter pilot, Colby became intent
on becoming a commanding officer and attended both the Naval War College
in Newport, Rhode Island and Armed Forces Staff College. Working his way
up through the ranks, Keel-Haul had been awarded the Navy Cross, DFC and
Air Medal before being given command of the new aircraft carrier, the U.S.S.
Flagg. He is also a respected military historian, a nationally-rated
chess player and a terrible clarinet player. Keel-Haul became an honorary
member of the G.I. Joe team when the Flagg was assigned as the Joes'
carrier whenever their missions called for it. While under Keel-Haul's
command, the Flagg rescued the crew of the Joe team's freighter,
the Jane, after that vessel was sunk by a Cobra aerial attack.
The carrier also served as a base for the team's air cover during their
first assault on the newly-created Cobra Island. During that battle, against
Keel-Haul's better judgment, Ace took off in his Skystriker jet despite
the fact that the carrier was severely listing after being struck by a
tidal wave. Some time later, Keel-Haul oversaw the Flagg's
use as a staging ground for the Joe team's invasion of Cobra Island during
Cobra's civil war. It was Keel-Haul's plan to use a stolen Cobra helicopter
to deliver a recon team to the island just before the operation began.
Over the years, the Flagg continued to be used as G.I. Joe's headquarters
at sea, and participated in many more missions, as well as the Battle of
Benzheen. Keel-Haul remains in command of the Flagg, patrolling various
hotspots around the world after the Joe team was shut down in 1994. He
was later called back to command the Flagg when the reinstated Joe team
battled the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. (GI 36, 40, 41,

once hired mercenary Major Bludd. (GIv2 5) |
| KIRKLAND, JAMES. A detective in the Redding,
California police department, who investigated the abduction of Julius
Taber, one of the young clones of Serpentor. Members of the Joe team took
over the investigation. (GIv2 16) |
| KLINE, BILLY. The owner of the
Watash automobile company, headquartered in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Kline
was also a close childhood friend of G.I. Joe team member Clutch. While
visiting his hometown, Clutch discovered that Cobra was holding Billy's
family captive, forcing him to develop and build a jetpack in his auto
plant. With the help of the Joe team, Clutch freed Billy and his family
and stopped Cobra's plans. (GI 20) |

KNOX,
DR. CASSANDRA.
A scientist who developed a highly-advanced prototype of
Battle Android Trooper while working for Cobra. Knox based the design
of
her android on Dr. Mindbender's previous version of the B.A.T., but
made
extensive modifications upon it. This B.A.T. had the ability to target
specific individuals using their brain-wave patterns. Knox was
extremely
ambitious and hoped that Cobra would pay her price for the android --
which
would surely make her wealthy. In her first test of the android --
shortly
before the Joe team was shut down -- Knox sent it to kill Scarlett. She
realized too late that sending her only prototype was a poor decision
when
Scarlett eventually destroyed it. Some time after the break up of Cobra
in 1995, Knox began working for Destro's weapons manufacturing company,
MARS. She served the company until Destro took control of Cobra after
Cobra Commander was captured by the G.I. Joe team, when Destro brought
her in to once again work for Cobra. She has recently been assigned the
task of analyzing Dr. Mindbender's powerful secret weapon, the Tempest.

KRIM,
DR. An elderly farmer in Southeast Asia encountered by the G.I.
Joe team. Krim had actually been the head of the philosophy department
of his country's largest university. After the country became communist,
a group "liberation cadres" arose, intent on ridding their country of western
exploiters. They rounded up and killed the people they considered intellectuals,
including Krim's brothers, sisters, wife and children, leaving him alone.
Joe team members Chuckles, Scarlett, Snake-Eyes and Iceberg were making
their way down the Mekong river in a small boat, unobtrusively making their
way to an extraction site after a mission. They spotted Krim on the riverbank
being beaten up by local bandits and intervened. Krim let them hide in
his small home to wait for their extraction chopper, but the Joes' altercation
sent the bandits to their chief and revolutionary, Big Tep. Tep and his
forces -- assisted by Destro's Iron Grenadiers -- were heading for Krim's
farm when they ran into communist forces led by General Lom and members
of the October Guard. In the fight that followed, Lom carelessly destroyed
much of Krim's farm with his armored vehicles, while the Joes watched from
a hiding place in Krim's home. Tep's men forced Lom to flee the area, but
they took the farm over and threatened Krim to tell them where the Americans
were. Despite Chuckles' fears, the old farmer refused to give up the Joes.
The Joes killed Tep's men and saved Krim. Some time later, the extraction
chopper arrived. Chuckles offered to bring the old man back to the States
with them since he had nothing left in his country. He declined, explaining,
"For better or for worse, this is my land and someday I will be a part
of it." Dr. Krim's current status is unknown. (SM 18) |
