MacHEATH. The Joes' undercover operative, Chuckles, took on the identity of MacHeath and posed as the new gameskeeper on Destro's family estate in Scotland. As MacHeath, Chuckles kept watch over Destro shortly before Cobra Commander launched an attack on his castle. Destro and the Baroness were completely unaware of MacHeath's true identity until Chuckles himself revealed it while helping fend off Cobra's attack. (GI 116)

MAINFRAME. The code name used by the G.I. Joe team's computer specialist, U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Blaine L. Parker. He was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1955. Mainframe originally served in the Army Airborne, enlisting when he was seventeen years old. He got to Vietnam for the last year of the war and received his Combat Infantryman's badge. He left the Army and got his degree at MIT on the G.I. Bill, and went on to work in the computer industry. It made him lots of money, but bored him very quickly. When he learned the Marines were looking for computer experts, he signed up and was soon back in uniform.

Mainframe was recruited by the G.I. Joe team in 1986, working as their primary computer expert. A few months after joining the team, Mainframe was sent on a mission into the Middle Eastern nation torn apart by the war between the Royalist rebels and the forces of dictator Colonel Sharif. Spy satellites had detected the infrared signature of a Cobra Terror-Drome launch base hidden in the country, and Mainframe and Dusty were sent in to locate the base. In exchange for helping the Royalists ambush one of Sharif's weapons convoys, the rebels gave the Joes a guide to lead them through the desert. The guide was a teenage rebel named Rashid. As the trio made their way across the desert, Rashid showed Mainframe no respect, seeing him as a weak "fixer of computers", far from the great fighting man Dusty was. Mainframe was mostly amused by the boy, not caring enough about his to opinion explain his past as a soldier. At the end of the mission, Mainframe's skills as a soldier came into play, and he gained Rashid's respect. In fact, Mainframe made such an impression on Rashid, the boy became an expert in computers himself, and was later seen working for Destro. Once the Joes' established the new Pit headquarters in Utah, Mainframe spent much of his time there, working with the team's advanced computer systems. After detecting a shuttle launched from Cobra Island, Mainframe headed into space onboard the space shuttle Defiant to defend U.S. satellites against a Cobra attack. Some time later, Mainframe worked on the U.S.S. Flagg as part of General Hawk's operations team during the Joes' involvement in the Cobra Island civil war. He served in the same capacity on the Flagg later during the Battle of Benzheen. For the next few years, Mainframe worked at the Pit, occasionally involved in  research and development for new weapons systems. After the Joe team was shut down in 1994, Mainframe returned to the computer industry, working as a software developer in Seattle, helping his company give its rivals some stiff competition. When the Joes were reinstated in 2001, computer technology played an even greater role in the military, and Mainframe was happy to return to the team. He headed up a large group of programmers working around the clock to find a way to stop Cobra's nano-mites -- microscopic machines that infected both humans and machines. Working with the Joes' doctor, Lifeline, Mainframe found a way to stop the 'mites. He later helped stop a Cobra BAT wreaking havoc in Chicago. He also used his computer skills to investigate the Jugglers' General Winters and the corrupt congressman Cartwright. On what was to become his final mission, Mainframe joined much of the Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. To allow for the start of the invasion, Mainframe and Flash infiltrated a radar station to rig up explosives to destroy the facility. The two Joes were delayed by Serpentor's troops and were unable to get out in time. Flash and Mainframe were both killed in the explosion that followed. Some time later, at Arlington National Cemetary, Mainframe's name was added to a new memorial dedicated to the fallen members of the G.I. Joe team. MAJOR BLUDD

MANGLER. An arrogant young soldier who nearly became a member of the G.I. Joe team. While many members of the team are simply hand-picked from the elite of the armed forces, some soldiers undergo the weeding out process of the Joes own version of boot camp. As a probationary member of the team, Mangler was sent on a mission in the Middle Eastern nation of Trucial Abysmia as his final exam. The supposedly simple mission to destroy a buried U.S. weapons cache became much more when the team led by Outback and Dusty was ambushed and captured by the local army. The team refused to answer questions, though the brash nineteen-year-old Mangler blurted out that they were from the G.I. Joe team. The unit's overzealous political officer took charge and decided to torture the Joes into talking. He randomly chose the other recruit, Lightfoot, who was severely beaten for a time, but refused to talk. When they finally used alligator clips to shock him with electricity, it was too much for him to bear, and Lightfoot revealed the team's objective. Mangler chastised Lightfoot for giving in, but Dusty and Outback backed him after seeing what he'd been through. When Mangler continued to berate Lightfoot, Dusty silenced him with a swift kick in the stomach. The Joes were left behind with a junior officer with orders to execute them while the rest of the enemy unit went to find the weapons cache. The officer disagreed with the torture of Lightfoot and let the Joes go rather than execute them. Left in the desert with only a small amount of water, the Joes were ready to head for friendly territory, but it was Lightfoot who pushed them to complete the mission. He could barely walk and Mangler carried him on his back through the desert. Mangler was impressed with Lightfoot and apologized to him after they destroyed the cache and made their escape in a stolen armored vehicle. The vehicle, however, proved to be difficult to get up enough speed and the Abysmian army vehicles were gaining on them. Mangler saw that the only way for the Joes to escape was for someone to slow down their pursuers. He jumped from the armored vehicle and stood in the path of the oncoming trucks, firing his machine and pistol. The other drivers swerved to miss the young soldier and collided. Mangler was crushed and killed in the accident. He was made a member of the team posthumously and is remembered as a hero. Mangler was buried in Arlington National Cemetary. (SM 13)

MARINER. The code name used by U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer David Adcox. In 2001, the newly reinstated G.I. Joe team's new recruits included eager young Adcox. He stood out among the young "greenshirts" and became one of the leaders of the young recruits. After the Joe's battle against Serpentor's forces on Cobra Island, Adcox became a full-fledged member of the Joe team as an amphibious warfare specialist under the code name "Mariner". On his first mission as Mariner, he took part in a fight off the coast of Cobra Island that served as a distraction to allow Barrel Roll to infiltrate Cobra's headquarters. (GIv2 2, 7, 28)

MARSHALL. A man working for terrorist Tyler Wingfield. (FL 13)

MARTINA. This woman from Sierra Gordo was the secretary of that nation's President Delacruz. (GIv2 29, 30)

MAVERICK

MAYDAY. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Paige Adams. She was among the reinstated G.I. Joe team's new recruits in 2001. Adams impressed Dusty with her marksmanship when he was running the new Joes through target practice. Adams later worked undercover on a joint Joe-Iron Grenadier mission to rescue Flint and Baroness from the Russian mafia. She later took part in the battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. Not long after that mission, Adams was made a full-fledged member of the Joe team as an urban warfare specialist under the code name "Mayday". On her first mission as Mayday, she took part in a fight off the coast of Cobra Island that served as a distraction to allow Barrel Roll to infiltrate Cobra's headquarters. The name "Mayday" is a reference to the short-lived G.I. Joe: Extreme series, which featured a female character with the same name. (GIv2 2, 7, 17-19, 24, 28)

MCCULLEN, ALEXANDER. Born in near poverty in the Midland Valley of Scotland, Alexander McCullen was raised by a single mother who spoke so little about his father, that Alexander did not even know his name. Unable to afford much in the way of education, Alexander learned from the criminals and gangs he fell in with during his youth. Resenting his situation in life, teenaged Alexander began to seek out information about his father's identity. He was pleased to learn he was none other than wealthy international arms dealer, James McCullen Destro XXIV. He researched his family history and became obsessed with gaining his father's approval and one day taking Destro's place in the family business. When he arrived at his father's home, Alexander found Destro bedridden and from a family illness, and learned that his father had not even known he existed. Alexander seized his opportunity and took over the family business, hoping to prove himself to his long lost father, even posing as Destro. The Baroness, despairing over Destro's condition, supported Alexander's effort to keep the business alive. When the fugitive Cobra Commander returned to America in 2001 with a renewed Cobra organization, he put a call out to his former high command. Alexander posed as Destro, arriving with the Baroness in tow. He quickly seized control of the organization and had the Commander locked in a padded cell and infected him with stolen nano-mite technology to drive him insane. Alexander's chief military strategist was Lilian Osbourne -- aka Mistress Armada -- a former British soldier whose interest in Alexander was more than just professional. Using nano-mites to cripple the nation's infrastructure, Alexander and Lilian began their plan to take over America, and soon had to lead a renewed Cobra in battle against the reinstated G.I. Joe team. When the Joes foiled their plans, Lilian and Alexander were "rescued" by the Baroness, only to be jailed by Destro in his castle in Trans-Carpathia. Destro vowed to make his son and Lilian pay for what they had done in his name. After his castle was attacked by Cobra Commander, Destro revealed that it was his son who took control of Cobra, and offered Lilian to the Commander as his prisoner. She served as the Commander's servant, doing menial tasks and waiting on him. Alexander, too, was forced to do the same by his father. He was finally given another chance when he helped Destro rescue the Baroness from Russian mobsters. When Cobra Commander was captured on Cobra Island by the forces of a revived Serpentor, he radioed Destro and told him all debts would be repaid if he led Cobra in the battle to rescue him. Destro commanded Cobra for a short time, and allowed both Lilian and Alexander to fight at his side. Destro returned to lead his Iron Grendiers and sent Alexander and Lilian on an assignment to recruit the mercenary known as Wraith to work for Destro. Alexander was happy to be working with Destro as he takes over Cobra, and continued to try and prove himself to his father. Lately, he has become concerned about his father's attentions now that he has learned he has married the Baroness and the couple is expecting their first child. He was then kept apart from Armada as Destro assigned her as one of the commanders of Cobra's forces in Europe. (GIv2 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 14, 19, 27, 29, 31, 33, 34, 36; AE 1, 6, 7; DDH)

MERCER. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Felix P. Stratton, from Spencer, West Virginia. (He has also used the alias Richard S. Cecil.) Mercer joined the ranks of Cobra Vipers for the promise of money and adventure. Becoming disaffected with Cobra, he had second thoughts and escaped from Cobra Island. He eventually began working undercover and worked with the G.I. Joe team on a number of classified missions before it was shut down in 1994. After the Joe team was reinstated in 2001, Mercer helped in the planning of the team's invasion of Cobra Island to battle the forces of a revived Serpentor, and joined in the battle. Some time later, after the Joes stopped a plot by Cobra to unleash the weapon known as the Tempest, and defeated a new threat, the Red Shadows, the military again disbanded the team. One year later, the Joe team was reformed with a smaller roster of active members. Mercer, like most former Joes, is a reserve member of the new team. He was called back to duty to stop a group of terrorists who had taken control of a Cobra biological weapon facility in Manhattan. (GIv2 23-26; SM:M; Figures: 1, 2, 3)

METAL-HEAD. An anti-tank specialist, Metal-Head is like a walking anti-tank weapon himself. He can launch missiles from his backpack and his hip-mounted swiveling holster tubes. His blast suit includes a built-in laser-guided targeting computer that ties into his range-finder goggles and is voice-activated. All Metal-Head has to do to fire is look at his target and yell "bang". Metal-Head is constantly ready for battle, and thinks of little else. The sheer joy he displays in combat often makes his enemies and allies question his sanity. Metal-Head joined Destro's Iron Grenadier army as his anti-tank specialist. When he began working for Cobra, he was there as a double-agent, spying on Cobra Commander for Destro. The Joes first encountered Metal-Head during the Battle of Benzheen when he personally went up against a group of G.I. Joe armored vehicles on foot, armed with his advanced missile system. Before the battle could be won, it was announced that Benzheen's Emir made a deal with Cobra, putting an end to hostilities. Metal-Head soon reported back to Destro in Scotland, warning that Cobra was planning to attack Castle Destro. Cobra Commander proved him right by launching an attack that led to the destruction of the castle. Metal-Head was not seen working for Destro or Cobra for years after the battle. Some time after Cobra was re-formed in 2001, Metal-Head was seen on Cobra Island working alongside Cobra troops led by Destro, fighting the forces of a revived Serpentor. (GI 114, 116; GIv2 24, 25; Figures: 1, 2, 3)

MICHAUD. An air traffic controller at the McCord Air Force Base in Washington, DC. Michaud was on duty when a government jet carrying a bio-lab carrying the Death Angel virus was hijacked and disappeared off radar. (FL 11)

MIRAGE. The code name used by U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Joseph R. Baikun, from Molsen, Washington. Mirage is a weapons expert, specialized in everything from small arms to shoulder-fired rockets, and he trains soldiers in the proper use of various weapons. Mirage served with the G.I. Joe team on a small number of missions shortly before the team was shut down in 1994. He was later called back to join the reinstated Joes, eventually joining in their battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. (GIv2 23, 25, 34-36; Figures: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

MISTRESS ARMADA. The daughter of wealthy British bureaucrats, Lilian Osborne was born in Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. Lilian became an incredibly spoiled teenager and was never satisfied with what her parents gave her. When they cut back on her allowance, she simply stole from them. Her father was fed up and sent Lilian to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. She took to the military life surprisingly well and graduated with top honors. She moved on to the British Army where she was trained in counter-intelligence and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD). While serving in the army, Lilian had a chance meeting with a charismatic civilian named Alexander McCullen. The young man's tales of the storied history of his family -- the Destro clan -- persuaded Osborne to leave the army and help in his quest to take over his family's arms-dealing business. She soon discovered that Alexander's claims of military experience and underworld connections were exaggerated to say the least, but she stuck with him, believing his plan had merit. Plus, her interest in McCullen was becoming more than just professional. McCullen was actually unknown to his father, Destro, and when he arrived at his home found his father bedridden by a family illness. Alexander seized his opportunity and took over the business, hoping to prove himself to his long lost father, even posing as Destro. Lilian, dubbed Mistress Armada, served as his chief military strategist, and many were surprised to see that "Destro" now had a close relationship with Armada instead of the Baroness. Using nano-mites to cripple the nation's infrastructure, Alexander and Lilian began their plan to take over America, and soon had to fight the reinstated G.I. Joe team. Lilian came to realize Alexander had become obsessed with proving his worth to his father, and began to question his sanity. When the Joe team foiled their plans, Lilian and Alexander were "rescued" by the Baroness, only to be jailed by Destro in his castle in Trans-Carpathia. Eventually, while Destro controlled Cobra in the Commander's brief absence, Lilian was freed. After Destro had her tested to rule out any brainwashing at the Commander's hands, Lilian began working for Destro alongside Alexander. Their first assignment was to track down the mercenary known as Wraith and hire him to work for Destro. Destro continues to keep a close eye on Lilian, and neither are completely convinced they can trust one another. Recently, Destro took control of Cobra and partnered Armada with Major Bludd as one of the commanders of Cobra's forces in Europe. (GIv2 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 14, 27, 29, 31, 33, 36, 37, 39, 40; BF 2; DDH; SM:T)

MONKEYWRENCH. Born Bill Winkie in the town of Rhyl in North Wales, Monkeywrench began building explosives from a young age. By age sixteen he had made himself a pariah in his hometown by building explosive devices for terrorists. He moved to London's East End and joined the "new wave" movement, developing extreme levels of rudeness and anti-social behavior. His wanderings brought him to Australia, where he joined the Dreadnoks. Only three Dreadnoks originally went with Zartan to America when he began working almost exclusively for Cobra. Monkeywrench made his way to America a few years later, where he worked with Zanzibar, stealing gasoline from the Dreadnoks' New Jersey gas station hideout. Zarana and Buzzer arrived at the scene of the crime and started beating on the two new arrivals, until Zanzibar revealed that he knew where to find a top secret missile silo in New Jersey, aimed at Cobra Island and guarded by a team of Joes. Monkeywrench and the Dreadnoks then attacked the missile base and fought the Joes before escaping. Some time later, Monkeywrench headed to Sierra Gordo with Zarana and Thrasher, all placed in charge of a Cobra Terror-Drome in the small nation. As the country erupted into civil war, the Dreadnoks hijacked a G.I. Joe transport plane, taking refugees as hostages. When the plane was shot down, Monkeywrench and the others had to join forces with the Joes to get out of the country alive. Monkeywrench continued to work with the Dreadnoks and Cobra for years until Cobra was broken up in 1995. The Dreadnoks were later expanded into an organized, national biker gang led by Zartan and in 2001, they began working again with a revived Cobra organization and renewed their fight against the G.I. Joe team. (GI 60, 69, 70, 71, 74, 75, 76, 77, 79, 81, 89, 90, 145; GIv2 10, 11, 27, 31, 38; FL 9-10; Figures: 1, 2)

MUSKRAT. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Ross A. Williams. Born in Thibodaux, Louisiana, Muskrat spent much of his youth in the swamps, hunting raccoon, possum and wild pig, and fighting poachers and other criminals. After joining the Army, Ranger School and the Jungle Warfare Training Center seemed like summer camp to him. He is skilled at fighting and hiding in the swamps, easily using his knowledge to throw anyone off his trail. He eventually joined the G.I. Joe team.

On his first mission with the Joes, Muskrat and several other new recruits fought to keep Cobra from claiming a newly-formed island not far from the original Cobra Island. They barely stopped Cobra before the entire landmass sunk back beneath the ocean. Some time later, Muskrat and a number of Joes flew a Tomahawk rescue chopper into Southeast Asia to pick up four Joes who had been on a long mission since before the war. The aircraft went up against Russian attack helicopters and was nearly shot down before the team reached their objective and picked up their teammates. Shortly after that, Muskrat and a team of Joes stormed the offices of Nexus Tech -- a software company contracted by the government -- to foil a hostage situation. The mission was successful, but it turned out that the hostages and terrorists all worked for Cobra, who had made a deal with the company's owner to cover up documents that proved he was cheating the government for years. When the truth was revealed, the corruption of the company didn't really bother him. As long as they all did what they had to do for the mission to succeed, he was satisfied. Later, he was part of a team that rescued a group of Joes being held prisoner in Sierra Gordo's capital. He would return to the country again when he and a small team of Joes fought against Destro's Iron Grenadiers and returned a third time when a group of Joes teamed with the new October Guard. That long mission took the team into the nation's jungles to fight the Iron Grenadiers with the help of the native Tucaros, and they all barely escaped with their lives. Muskrat continued his service with the team over the next few years, fighting in the Joes' biggest operation yet, Battle of Benzheen, and protecting the Pit III in Utah from a Cobra invasion. He was a member of the team until it was shut down in 1994. (GI 80, 86, 92, 100-105, 113, 131; SM 17, 18, 19, 23; Figures: 1, 2, 3)
