O

ONE. The nickname of one of the G.I. Joe team's greenshirt recruits. New recruits are usually given joke nicknames until they earn their Joe codename. After spending weeks of training, One and his fellow "Alpha Team" recruits were sent on a training mission led by Beach Head into a wartorn country to fight a group of rebels. For that mission, Beach Head dropped the greenshirts' nicknames and referred to them only by number, much to their aggravation. A battle erupted as the team tried to make it to an extraction chopper after rescuing "Three". Beach Head was nearly left behind, but the entire team eventually escaped. (FL 17)

OPHELIA. Ophelia Gabriel began training under Snake-Eyes to be the last student of the Arashikage ninja clan. Ophelia began training with former G.I. Joe Ninja Force members Nunchuk and T'Jbang shortly after the Joe team was shuut down in 1994. After two years of training, Snake-Eyes began training her directly, readying her for the "final trial". Though he didn't tell anyone, Snake-Eyes felt close to Ophelia because she reminded him of his dead sister. After a year of training, the final trial came when Duke sent word to Snake-Eyes that Duke's black ops Hammer Team was about to set a trap for the former Cobra agent and Arashikage enemy Firefly. Duke's five-member team included Sean Collins and former Russian commando, Mikhail Derenko, and they were to capture Firefly after he had been "hired" to destroy a factory. Duke secretly included Snake-Eyes, hoping his presence would change the mission enough that a traitor in the Hammer Team would reveal himself. Snake-Eyes and Ophelia arrived along with Firefly and the Hammer Team, but the mission turned disastrous when Firefly realized the set-up and set off a series of explosions that killed most of the Hammer Team, except for Sean Collins and the presumed dead Derenko. As Firefly escaped, Ophelia tried to stop him herself. Snake-Eyes could not get to her before Firefly shot and killed Ophelia. Snake-Eyes was so devastated by her death that he called off his marraige to Scarlett. He retreated to his cabin in the High Sierras and buried Ophelia nearby. Some time later, Sean Collins arrived at the cabin where he became Snake-Eyes apprentice, naming himself Kamakura, and after the Joe team was reinstated, Snake-Eyes and Scarlett reconciled. ORDER. (see LAW & ORDER.)

ORLOV, SERGEANT. A member of the Russian Spetsnaz 2nd Brigade -- a group of elite commandos -- who was captured by Afghani rebels along with his commanding officer Lieutenant Gomorov and Private Pritkin. They were "rescued" from the Afghanis by Joes Falcon, Psyche-Out and Slip-Stream, who were all posing as soviet troops. Though Orlov and the others kept it from the Joes, they knew they were Americans in disguise. The Joes sent the Soviets to rescue a captured CIA operative in Iran, so the United States would not be blamed for the rescue. Gomorov decided to let his men complete the mission. In the end, he and the others sent the CIA agent to the Joes, but made their own escape back to Soviet territory. (SM 9)

OUTBACK. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Stuart R. Selkirk. Outback grew up in Big Piney, Wyoming, where he developed his love for the wilderness and his survival skills. After joining the Army, he served as an intructor at both Survival School and the Jungle Warfare Training Center. He also participated in various classified missions in Central America, and may of may not have participated in clandestine operations in the Middle East. Outback was later assigned to the G.I. Joe team. Outback met up with the Joes in the Rocky Mountains, after he was dropped off six hundred miles away with a ruck sack full of new survival equipment and food to test out for the Army. When he reached the Joe convoy led by Hawk, he was asked about the food and equipment he was supposed to test. He wasn't impressed: "Sir, with all due respect, all of that crummy stuff fell apart after the first week and that freeze-dried stuff was just plain inedible...I've been living off the land, and living good!" As the convoy rolled on, the Joes were forced to fend off an attack from the new Cobra Pogo vehicle, piloted by Cobra Commander himself.

A disastrous mission into Eastern Europe led to Outback's most difficult time on the team. Along with Stalker, Quick Kick and Snow Job, he travelled to the Soviet bloc country of Borovia. The mission was top secret and they were told that the state department would disavow all knowledge of their mission if they were captured. A series of events led the Joes to be captured, with only Outback escaping into the sewers of Borovia. He was ordered to get out of the country and ask for help. Stalker stayed behind since Snow Job and Quick Kick were injured, and they were his responsibility. Outback made his way through the Borovian sewers and through the small nation, staying one step ahead of the Borovian Special Police. He barely made his escape to a friendly country bordering Borovia. The government did in fact disavow all knowledge and the three captured Joes were thrown into a Borovian gulag. When Outback made his way back to the Pit in Utah, he was met with suspicion from some of the other Joes, who wondered how he got out while his buddies were left behind to rot in a prison camp. Unable to reveal anything about the mission, Outback couldn't even explain the situation and defend himself. When he was confronted by Leatherneck, In no mood to have the angry Marine yell at and threaten him, Outback pulled a hunting knife on him, warning, "Don't you even begin to threaten me..." The situation was quickly defused by the other Joes, but many remained suspicious. Months later, when Stalker and the others returned after being rescued, Outback felt guilty over leaving them behind. The freed Joes told him he had done the right thing and had nothing to be ashamed of. On his next mission, Outback and Dusty were leading what was supposed to be a simple operation to blow up a hidden weapons cache in the desert. The mission was to serve as a training mission for two newly-recruited Joes, Lightfoot and Mangler. To their surprise, the Joes found themselves under attack by members of  the Trucial Abysmian army. The four Joes were captured, and the unit's overzealous Aman tortured Lightfoot until he revealed the Joes' plans. Most of the army unit left to find the weapons, with the unit's commander, Captain Yusif staying behind to execute the Joes. He had tried to stop political officer's brutality and now let the Joes free, telling them to head for a friendly port. They decided to head for the cache anyway, and traveled across the desert with no vehicle and little food. Dusty and Outback's knowledge of desert survival made certain they reached their goal. They completed their mission, though Mangler was killed insuring his teammates' escape. Outback later participated in the Cobra Island civil war, which the Joes entered on the side of Serpentor. Shortly afterward, he and Ripcord led a group of new recruits to keep Cobra from claiming a newly-formed island not far from the original Cobra Island. They were barely victorious before the entire landmass sunk back beneath the ocean. Later, Outback was one of the small team of Joes observing Castle Destro when Cobra attacked the Scottish castle. Outback continued to work with the team for years until it was shut down in 1994. (GI 59, 61, 62, 64, 67, 76, 80, 86, 87, 130, 131; OB 2; SM 6, 13, 27; GIv2 25; Figures: 1, 2, 3, 4)

OVERKILL. One SAW Viper's cold-blooded actions proved tragic for the G.I. Joe team. Misunderstanding orders from Cobra Commander, Tomax and Xamot ordered the SAW Viper to execute a small group of Joes captured in Trucial Abysmia before the Battle of Benzheen. The ruthless, merciless Viper shot and killed seven of the unarmed Joes and seemed to enjoy it before the remaining Joes made their escape. After more Joes were killed by Cobra, the three survivors -- Duke, Falcon and Cross Country -- tracked down the SAW Viper to avenge their fallen comrades. Duke finally had the SAW Viper in his sights, unarmed. Duke couldn't bring himself to kill the defenseless man and left him where he found him. After initially worrying about the Joes' retaliation, Cobra Commander threw a party in the honor of the SAW Viper. After being last seen fighting in the Battle of Benzheen, that particular SAW Viper's current status is unknown. (GI 109-112)

OVERLORD. Lieutenant Mikhail Derenko was a former Russian Spetznaz commando when he joined the Hammer Team, a U.S. covert ops unit. The team's five-member roster included Sean Collins, the son of former Crimson Guardsman Wade Collins. Derenko was recruited by the CIA, who promised to take care of his elderly mother. The Hammer Team's first mission took them to Afghanistan to weed out a rogue Cobra cell that had continued operating years after Cobra was disbanded in 1995. U.S. intelligence later learned that Derenko actually helped a number of Cobra agents escape during that mission. The team's second mission was led by the former G.I. Joe sergeant, Duke -- who had been working for a secret government organization since the break up of the Joe team -- and undercover operative Chuckles. The goal of the mission was to take down the mercenary Firefly after an elaborate trap was set. Unfortunately, the mission was a disastrous failure. Firefly set off a series of explosions that apparently killed all of the Hammer Team except for Sean Collins. In reality, Derenko survived and continued working as a mercenary. Working with the former Cobras he freed in Afghanistan, Derenko apparently began to work for a revived Serpentor, and began recruiting soldiers, mercenaries and more former Cobra operatives to organize the Coil, an army loyal to Serpentor. Eventually, under the name "Nowhere Man", Derenko met with Firefly in Tokyo, where he was to try and recruit Storm Shadow. The meeting was disrupted when Snake-Eyes, Sean Collins (now ninja apprentice Kamakura), Jinx and Budo arrived, hoping to stop Firefly. After a fight with the Joes, Derenko's men helped Firefly escape, and the ninjas learned that Storm Shadow was working for Duke and Chuckles to expose the Nowhere Man. At a nightclub in Japan, the mercenaries and the former Joes fought again as Derenko and his men attempted to access an old Cobra weapon locked in a vault that could only be opened by Cobra's high command or members of the Crimson Guard. Sean Collins was shocked to discover that Derenko's latest recruit was his own father. Wade explained that he only joined with Derenko to bring down his organization from the inside to atone for his past and to make his son proud. As Sean lunged at his former teammate, Derenko redirected his attack, causing Sean's sword to fatally wound his father. Derenko made his escape, but not before Sean attacked him with throwing stars and blinded him in one eye. The Joes never realized that he had been working for Serpentor. Years later, after the G.I. Joe team was reinstated to fight a renewed Cobra, Serpentor finally revealed himself and the Coil. Derenko served as Serpentor's field commander under the name "Overlord". His battle armor included a helmet that kept his face hidden and a deadly claw weapon that attached to his arm. Based on Cobra Island, the Coil appeared seemingly out of nowhere to attack various nations and the United States. Eventually, the Coil faced off against the invading armies of G.I. Joe and Cobra. During the fighting, Overlord killed Chuckles, though he never revealed his true identity. In the wake of the battle both Overlord and Serpentor were missing. As the Joes and Cobra regrouped, Overlord was contacted by General Gibbs and other members of the Jugglers -- a cabal of Generals who plagued the Joes in the past -- who asked him to help them recover Serpentor's body. He agreed to help in exchange for use of military medical facilities. He began spending most of his time in a laboratory where Serpentor's body floated in a tank as scientists worked to modify his DNA and "re-educate" him into an operative to use as Gibbs sees fit. General Gibbs' ultimate goal and final plans for Serpentor and Overlord have yet to be revealed. (GIv2 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 36, 40; MA 1-4; Figures: 1, 2) Overlord's filecard background does not match his comic book origin.

OZONE. The codename used by U.S. Army Corporal David Kunitz, member of the Eco-Warriors. Ozone was born in Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania. His Eco-Warriors equipment included special backpack which could purify the air of various toxins and pollutants. The Eco-Warriors were formed to stop threats to the environment. In their first assignment with the Joes, Ozone and Clean-Sweep were lead by Flint, who was temporarily reassigned. The three Joes had to stop a former Cobra agent, Cesspool, from polluting the ocean using toxic chemicals and an abandoned oil platform. As the others fought Cesspool, Ozone flew off in his Battle Copter and returned with the ultimate weapon to stop environmental offenders: a lawyer. Flint left the team shortly after the mission. The Eco-Warriors' subsequent missions remain classified. (GI 123-125; Figures: 1, 2, 3, 4)
