| PANCHO. A bodyguard of Punta
Del Mucosa's
El Presidente. He and fellow bodyguard Cisco were guarding the
Presidente
as he inspected the G.I. Joe team's Stealth fighter base in the small
nation.
They were both paid by Cobra to place a homing device onboard one of
the
fighter that would lead Cobra bombers right to the base. The homing
device
was discovered and both men were tied to a tractor and the device was
stuck
into Pancho's mouth. When Cobra arrived, the bombers destroyed the
tractor,
along with Pancho and Cisco. (SM 28) |
| PATHFINDER. The code name used
by U.S.
Army Staff Sergeant William V. Iannotti. Born in Key West, Florida,
Pathfinder
spent much of his time in the alligator-infested swamps in the area,
learning
survival skills at a young age. His father had plenty of experience in
survival, himself a decorated Korean War reconnaissance specialist, and
taught his son everything he knew before. Before enlisting, Pathfinder
already knew how to make trails where there were none, detect unnatural
jungle sounds and sneak up on unsuspecting targets. After enlistment,
he
quickly became one of the Army's top jungle warfare and recon
specialist.
Pathfinder joined the G.I. Joe team on a number missions before the
team
was shut down in 1994. Years later, Pathfinder joined the reinstated
Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on
Cobra
Island. (GIv2 24; Figures: 1, 2) |
PAYLOAD.
The
code name used by U.S. Air Force Colonel Mark Morgan Jr. Born in Cape
Canaveral,
Florida, Payload grew up watching America's earliest space shots launch
into the Florida sky. For years, he worked on that dream until it
became
a reality. He joined the Air Force and flew F-4 Phantom fighter jets
over
Southeast Asia for three tours of duty, then signed up for astronaut
training
upon his return home.
As an astronaut, Payload piloted the G.I. Joe team's space
shuttle Defiant
on several missions into space. From the Defiant's home at the
Pit
III in Utah, Payload headed up the shuttle's first mission to stop
Cobra's
own space shuttle from stealing U.S. spy satellites. The mission failed
when Cobra decided to destroy the satellites after the Joes prevented
their
enemy from stealing them. Some time later, Payload managed to fly the Defiant
into
the earth's atmosphere and rescue a fighter pilot, after which he
performed
the amazing feat of landing the shuttle on the deck of the aircraft
carrier
U.S.S.
Flagg. He later led the mission that launched a Joe vehicle into
orbit,
then dropped it into Trucial Abysmia on a rescue mission to save the
group
of Joes who survived an attack by Cobra in which a SAW Viper killed
several
others. A few years later, Payload piloted the
Defiant along with
the newly formed Star Brigade in a joint mission with the former Soviet
unit, the October Guard, to destroy an asteroid heading for earth. The
Star Brigade mission was the last G.I. Joe team mission Payload took
part
in before the unit was shut down in 1994. (GI

| PERCY. The armorer at the
Chaplains' Assistants
School at Fort Wadsworth. Percy was in charge of access to the armory
at
the School. When members of the suspended Joe team tried to arm
themselves
to defend against a Cobra attack on the Pit, Percy tried to stop them.
Flint threatened him at first, but Roadblock said he didn't need to
threaten
Percy, and just tore the armory's door off its hinges. (GI

| PHILIP. One of ten clones
created by Dr.
Mindbender when trying to create Serpentor, named for Philip of
Macedonia.
The nine young clones would grow at a slower rate than normal, and
Mindbender
nearly abandoned them once he perfected the process to create the
mature
clone that became Serpentor, but instead placed them in stasis and left
them alive unbeknownst to Cobra Commander. Each clone was the
amalgamation
of history's greatest soldiers. After the defeat of Cobra in the 1995,
the U.S. government raided Mindbender's secret lab on Cobra Island and
recovered the clone children. They were placed in foster care until
Serpentor
and Dr. Mindbender gathered them in secrecy. All the children joined
Serpentor
on Cobra Island during a battle between his forces and Cobra and G.I.
Joe.
After the battle, Philip and the other boys were again placed in the
care
of the government. (GIv2 24, 25) |
| PINCUS. A television news
cameraman covering
the aftermath of a battle at Manhattan's Battery Park Marina between a
group of Joes and Cobra Mamba helicopters led by Destro, a short time
after
the Joe team was officially disbanded by the military. (FL

POLLY.
The
pet parrot owned by G.I. Joe team member Shipwreck. Polly had a habit
of
repeating nautical terms and commands. He even learned an old sailing
song
or two, sometimes including Shipwreck's name in it. Polly was often
considered
an annoyance by other Joes and Shipwreck himself, so he took part in
few
missions with the team. (SM 1, 27; YB 2; SM:M; Figures: 1, 2) |
| PRITKIN, PRIVATE. A member of
the Russian
Spetsnaz 2nd Brigade -- a group of elite commandos -- who was captured
by Afghani rebels along with his commanding officer Lieutenant Gomorov
and Sergeant Orlov. They were "rescued" from the Afghanis by Joes
Falcon,
Psyche-Out and Slip-Stream, who were all posing as soviet troops.
Though
Pritkin and the others kept it from the Joes, they knew they were
Americans
in disguise. The Joes sent the Soviets to rescue a captured CIA
operative
in Iran, so the United States would not be blamed for the rescue.
Gomorov
decided to let his men complete the mission. In the end, he and the
others
sent the CIA agent to the Joes, but made their own escape back to
Soviet
territory. (SM 9) |
PSYCHE-OUT.
The
code name used by U.S. Army Captain Kenneth D. Rich. Rich was born in
San
Francisco and attended nearby Berkeley, where he got his degree in
psychology.
He worked on various research projects involving the use of low
frequency
radio waves to induce paranoia. Upon his enlistment in the Army he was
posted to Fort Bragg's Deceptive Warfare Center where he continued his
research and occasionally served as a social services counselor.
Psyche-Out
later joined the G.I. Joe team, bringing along his knowledge of
psychological
warfare and served as the team's resident psychologist. When Psyche-Out first arrived at the Joes' headquarters in
Utah, he
and Chuckles became suspicious when the secret underground construction
of the Pit was hidden from them. They learned that nothing sinister was
going on after they were given full security clearance. Not long after
joining the team, Psyche-Out cleared Snake-Eyes and Scarlett of any
wrongdoing
in the illegal rescue of a group of Joes from a Borovian gulag. Though
the Joes knew they faked their own death by pretending to be killed by
an exploding landmine, Psyche-Out (with some gentle nudging from Hawk)
reported that the two Joes temporarily lost their senses due to the
landmine
blast. Some time later, Psyche-Out was stuck in the nation of Sierra
Gordo
with Hawk and Roadblock after the country's civil war complicated the
Joes'
rescue of an American ambassador. During the closing battle of the
Cobra
civil war, Psyche-Out commanded a team of reinforcements to help the
Joes
turn the tide of battle. Tok part in many other missions with the team,
including an operation to sneak into the Cobra Consulate in New York
and
the rescue of a CIA agent captured by Soviet troops in Afghanistan. He
served on many more missions before the team was shut down in 1994.
After the Joe team was reinstated in 2001, Psyche-Out evaluated the
mental health of the child clones of Serpentor after the government
took them into custody. (GI 64,
