R

RAMIREZ, HECTOR. The host of the WNN network television newsmagazine, "Twenty Questions". Ramirez has covered a number of political and military issues, including the terrorist plot by Tyler Wingfield. He recently interviewed Hawk on his program to discuss a crisis in Sierra Gordo. Shortly after the interview a bomb planted by Cobra leveled the television studio. Many people survived the blast, and Ramirez escaped with minor injuries. Hector Ramirez first appeared on the G.I. Joe cartoon series, but his first comic appearance came almost twenty years later in Frontline #12. (GIv2 25, 26, 28, 29, 34; FL 12)

RAMPART. The code name used by U.S. Navy Petty Officer (2nd class) Dwayne A. Felix. Growing up in New York City, Rampart spent much of his time playing video games in the arcade and at home. He mastered every video game he could play, and developed amazing hand-eye coordination. He decided the military was the best place to put his talents to good use and joined the Navy. Specialing in air defense artillery, Rampart attained the highest combat success ratio in the 7th Fleet for "splashing" enemy aircraft. Rampart eventually joined the G.I. Joe team, where he served during the Battle of Benzheen when the Joe team invaded the desert nation in their biggest operation to date. Rampart served on a number of classified missions for the Joes until the team was shut down in 1994. (GI 115)

RAPTOR. Once a yuppie accountant, Raptor took up falconry and soon became obsessed with the birds of prey. He began to breed them and even train them to be bigger and stronger and to attack other animals. He himself claims that he wears his falcon costume simply to make the birds more comfortable around him. Destro caught Raptor poaching on Cobra property and decided he could be of use. He helped fund Raptor's attempts to breed even deadlier mutated falcons. He began working with the undercover Crimson Guardsman, Fred VII in his secret lab in Denver, hidden behind his auto service station. In addition to his work with his birds, he also did Fred's accounting. When the presumed-dead Cobra Commander arrived with his son Billy to ask for Fred's help, he met Raptor, looked at his costume and immediately decided the man must be crazy. Raptor rambled on about what his birds can do for the history of Cobra, but the Commander wasn't impressed. Raptor then proved he wasn't all that crazy by hacking into the U.S. Army computer and discovered that there was a Joe convoy driving through Utah. The Commander, Fred and Raptor headed to Utah, where Raptor used his birds to track down the Joes. The Commander then staged a brief attack on the convoy. Later, Raptor looked on as the Commander decided that he would turn his back on Cobra to be a better father to Billy. Fred, enraged because he had given his whole life to Cobra, shot Cobra Commander in the back, presumably killing him. Raptor and Fred buried the Commander's body outside of Denver. Shortly after, Raptor spotted Billy and Jinx driving away from the martial arts academy next door. Jinx and the Blind Master had been next door for some time, spying on Fred. He followed them all the way to San Francisco and kept watch on them as they headed into the Presidio Army base. He then called Fred in Denver and got no answer. He had no idea that Fred had left, and headed for Cobra Island where he would pose as Cobra Commander for some time. Raptor's activities are uncertain for the next two years, though he may or may have not worked for Cobra in that time. He next surfaced in San Francisco, confronting Billy and telling him he knew that Fred VII had replaced his father and knew where the Commander was buried. Billy, Raptor, Zartan and others headed to the island to reveal the truth, and Raptor secretly told Dr. Mindbender what had happened. Raptor brought the Cobra scientist to the Commander's gravesite, where he hoped to use his genetic material to create a new leader. But the grave was empty and Cobra Commander stepped out of the forest, along with a dozen Crimson Guardsman, revealing he had only been near death until the Siegies saved him. Back on Cobra Island, the Commander threw many of those he considered traitors into the island's landlocked freighter. Raptor was thrown in, as well. The freighter was sealed and buried under a volcano, leaving them all to die. Though a few of those in the freighter managed to escape, Raptor was not one of them. His body was found months later when Vipers opened the freighter. (GI 59, 61, 62, 63, 94, 95, 97, 98, 99; SM 24; Figure: 1)

RATNIKOV, COLONEL. A Borovian Security Police officer. After members of the Joe team broke into the State Security building in Borovian capitol of Krogdnz, Ratnikov arrived with his men and captured Stalker, Quick Kick and Snow Job, while Outback escaped. Ratnikov ordered Stalker to be beaten into unconsciousness, revived and beaten again. When he discovered that Outback was loose somewhere in the city, he personally led the search for him. Outback eluded the Security Police and led them on a chase all the way to Borovia's western border, hoping to reach the friendly nation on the other side. When Ratnikov caught up with him, Outback turned the tables on his pursuers and took the Colonel hostage. With Ratnikov at gunpoint, Outback forced a helicopter pilot to fly him across the border, but never actually told him where they were headed. Outback told the pilot and the Colonel that if they turned around and headed for home, they would be all right. He then bailed out above the low cloud cover. Though they couldn't see what was below, Ratnikov ordered the pilot to descend, refusing to listen to what the Joe told him. By the time Ratnikov realized that they had crossed the border into enemy territory it was too late. Enemy anti-aircraft guns fired on his helicopter and destroyed it. (GI 61, SM 6)

RECOIL. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Joseph Felton from Fashion Island, Washington. Recoil was a marathon runner and professional body builder before joining the Army and eventually G.I. Joe. His physical conditioning qualified him for Long Range Recon Patrol, requiring stealth and speed. One of his first missions for the Joes was as a member of a recon team operating during the Battle of Benzheen, when the Joe team invaded the desert nation in their biggest operation to date. Recoil served on a number of classified missions for the Joes until the team was shut down in 1994. Several years later, Recoil joined the reinstated Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. (GI 111-113; GIv2 24; Figure: 1)

RECONDO

RED NINJA WARLORD. see FIREFLY

RED STAR. The code name used by Russian Army Colonel Anatoly Fyodorovich Krimov. Red Star was born in Odessa, Ukraine in Russia, back in the days of the Soviet Union. Anatoly was an exceptional child, becoming the youngest chess master in Odessa at eleven years old. Later in life, he became a published Pushkin scholar, his monograph on "Boris Godonov" being considered the definitive work on the subject. Red Star also coaches the pistol team at the Dynamo Sports Club in Moscow. After joining the Soviet Navy, Red Star became a member of the elite Black Sea Regiment of the Soviet Naval infantry. Among his many campaigns was the Soviets' fight against rebels in Afghanistan during the 1980s. Red Star was assigned to take command of the October Guard, but did so just as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. The October Guard was soon disbanded, but its former members occasionally worked together. Under Colonel Red Star's command, the former members of the Guard headed off into space on a mission with the Joes, to stop a mad Russian scientist's robot drones from causing an asteroid to collide with the Earth. On that mission, the Joes learned that Red Star -- for a reason that he refused to disclose and remains a mystery today -- looked exactly like the Guard's first commander, the late Colonel Brekhov, right down to his habit of smoking cigars. The mission was a success, and proved again that the Joes and their former rivals had become allies. Red Star continued to serve with the Soviet Navy for many years. His current status is unknown. (GI 146-148; Figures: 1)

REGINALD. A chaplain's assistant at the Army Chaplains' Assistants School at Fort Wadsworth. (GI 45)

REPEATER. The code name used by U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jeffrey R. Therien, a veteran soldier from Cumberland, Rhode Island with over thirty years in the Army. He never rose above his current rank because he was best out in the field. After making it through the G.I. Joe team's grueling training program, Repeater's first mission was a "final exam" when he and a group of Joes stopped an Iron Grenadier raid on the Picatinny Weapons Arsenal. He was later one of a group of Joe that met the original G.I. Joe while defending a government laser facility in Manhattan. He served on many more missions for the team including a rescue mission to retrieve a group of Joes stranded in Southeast Asia, and the defense of the Pit when Cobra invaded the Joe headquarters. Repeater continued to serve on the team until it was shut down in 1994. Several years later, Pathfinder joined the reinstated Joe team in its battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. (GI 82, 86, 89, 93, 100, 131; SM 18, 19; GIv2 25; Figures: 1, 2)

RIPCORD

RIPPER. Born in Grim Cape, Tasmania, Henry Nod was a delinquent from the time he stole candy from his fellow nursery schoolers. He took up a life of crime and spent most of his life in and out of correctional institutions. Some sources say that he spent time in the Australian military, where he gained an affinity for motorcycles. Afterwards, he returned to a life of crime as a safe cracker. Under the name "Ripper", he fell in with biker gangs and eventually joined the Dreadnoks after being thrown out of several other gangs. His weapons of choice are various edged weapons and cutting tools, especially a huge bayonet-like blade he uses like a cross between a fireman's axe and a can opener. Like most other Dreadnoks he simply loves violence and simply tearing things apart. He has been overheard while ripping Air Force fighter jet to shreds, shouting, "There's nothing like it in the whole world! Destruction and wreckage!" One of the most simple-minded Dreadnoks, Ripper was also superstitious and very much afraid of Zartan. He was one of the three Dreadnoks -- with Buzzer and Torch -- who traveled to the United States with Zartan, who had begun working for Cobra. Ripper and the Dreadnoks came up against the Joes again and again, serving as Zartan's destructive henchman. After working with Cobra for years, the Dreadnoks were reorganized into a national biker gang led by Zartan. In 2001, they began working again with Cobra and renewed their fight against the G.I. Joe team. After a battle in the streets of Washington against the Joes and a new, advanced BAT, Ripper and many of the original Dreadnoks were arrested and held in Blackwater Prison. They were eventually freed due to the legal mechanations of Tomax and Xamot and went on to join in the battle against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. They later freed Zartan from a military facility where he was being held prisoner. Over a year later, he and others fought Duke and General Rey when they came looking for information about Rey's past from Zandar. (for more information about Ripper, see Dreadnoks) (GI 25, 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 38, 47-52, 55, 64, 74-77, 79, 81, 90, 91, 93, 98; YB 3; OB 3; BF 2; GIv2 2, 6, 10-14, 27, 31, 38; FL 1, 2, 10; AE 5, 6, 19, 20; DDH; Figures: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

ROADBLOCK

ROAD PIG. The nickname used by Dreadnok Donald DeLuca. When Road Pig was born in Goblu, Michigan, the doctor held him up and called him the ugliest baby he had ever seen. He grew up like most Dreadnoks, starting his antisocial behavior at an early age. He was expelled from kindergarten for milk money extortion and dishonorably discharged by the boy scouts. Also like most Dreadnoks, he enjoyed performing senseless acts of violence. His favorite weapon is nothing more than a cinder block on the end of a lead pipe. He accumulated an impressive arrest record over the years and was a member of a low-life outlaw biker gang until he was kicked out for smelling worse than was acceptable by even their standards. He eventually joined up with the Dreadnoks on a probationary period, since even they weren't comfortable around him. What makes Road Pig unique is a rare split-personality disorder which he exhibits through two identities: Road Pig and Donald. Road Pig is his stupid and violent side, while Donald is intelligent and speaks in a poetic and proper manner, using a very large vocabulary. He seems to switch between these personalities on a moments notice, sometimes in mid-sentence. When Donald's patience wears thin, Road Pig comes to the surface, usually when he's at his most angry and destructive. Though, both identities remain extremely dangerous. One thing that both personalities share is a fondness for Zarana, who Donald calls his "lady love". Zarana never returned his love, but knew it was best to play along with him to keep him under control, and saw the obvious advantage to have him around at least as a bodyguard. Years after the Dreadnoks came to America with Zartan, Road Pig was in the middle of a barroom brawl he started when he noticed a news report showing the arrest of Zarana and Zanzibar in New Jersey. Road Pig hopped on his motorcycle and single-handedly attacked the State Police station where the Dreadnoks were being held. The police were unable to stop Road Pig as he knocked down the bars of the jail and rescued the two Dreadnoks. Over the next few years, Road Pig (and Donald) remained by Zarana's side, joining the Dreadnoks as they ran Cobra's community on the Jersey Shore, Broca Beach. As most of the Dreadnoks left Cobra's employ, Zarana -- and Road Pig -- continued working for the Commander, helping to fill the void left by the departure of most of his high command. In the years after the Joe team was disbanded, Road Pig joined the newly expanded Dreadnok organization once again led by Zartan. The group once again began working for a renewed Cobra years later, Road Pig included. He later joined Cobra in the fight against the forces of a revived Serpentor on Cobra Island. (GI 83, 89, 90, 91, 93, 98, 99, 128, 129, 135, 136, 137, 138, 140; SM 21; GIv2 2, 6, 11, 12, 24, 36, 38; BF 2; AE 5, 19, 20; DDH; Figures: 1, 2, 3)

ROCK & ROLL

RUDI. One of a group of terrorists who robbed the main American P.X. in Frankfurt, West Germany. Rudi was the leader of the group. They took several hostages, who were later exchanged for Lady Jaye, Scarlett and Jinx, all posing as local hospital nurses. The terrorists tried to escape in an armored car. They were stopped after the Joe team commandeered a streetcar and the hostages fought back. Rudi was stopped by Lady Jaye and Jinx. (SM 11)

RUGRAT. A recent member of the new, organized national Dreadnok group that was founded after Cobra was disbanded in 1995. After the entire Dreadnok organization had begun working for Cobra, Rugrat and other Dreadnoks attacked Roadblock while the Joe was taping his television cooking show in Los Angeles, on orders from Tomax and Xamot. (FL 18)

RUMBLER. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Philo R. Makepeace. Born in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, Rumbler spent time as a tractor-trailer truck driver before joining the Army, where he became experienced in driving various armored vehicles. He was eventually recruited by the G.I. Joe team to drive their huge, heavily-armed assault vehicle, the Rolling Thunder. After his first mission for the team during the Cobra civil war, he drove the Rolling Thunder when he and several other Joes fought to keep Cobra from claiming a newly-formed island not far from the original Cobra Island. They barely stopped Cobra before the entire land mass sunk back beneath the ocean. He later helped a team of Joes on a secret mission to rescue Joes and members of the Octover Guard being held in Sierra Gordo. He was also one of the many Joes serving in the Battle of Benzheen, the Joe team's biggest operation to date. Though this character was called "Rumbler" in the comic series, he is obviously meant to be based on the action figure named Armadillo, driver of the Rolling Thunder. Confusingly, there is another figure named Rumbler that came with the Crossfire remote control vehicle. (GI 80, 81, 92, 99, 111, 112; Figure: Armadillo)

RUSS. A military veteran living in Millville at the time of Cobra's invasion of the small town. Russ resisted the brainwashing of the Brain-wave Scanner and helped Mutt and Spirit rally a local street gang to rebel against Cobra's take-over. Russ and the others discovered that Cobra could turn off the brainwashing to make Millville seem like a normal town to any unwelcome visitors. Hawk and Law arrived to find Mutt, Spirit, Russ and the gang attacking a seemingly normal town. They were all taken into custody. Months later, a Joe invasion of the town cleared their names. Russ' current status is unknown. (SM 100-103)
