G.I. JOE

Volume 2

Image Comics & Devil's Due Publishing - 2001-2004
Devil's Due Publishing - 2004-2005

43 issues

In 2001, two years after the plans for Bench Press Comics' G.I. Joe series fell through, another young company named Devil's Due Publishing acquired the rights and began publishing a new series distributed through Image Comics. The company's founder, Josh Blaylock wrote the series, starting with a 4 issue story arc. The story depicts the Joe team's reinstatement following the return of Cobra Commander to the United States after Cobra was defeated several years earlier. The series followed along with the storyline of Marvel's original series, mixing some new characters with the original Joes, including the son of Destro and the daughter of Zartan. The new G.I. Joe had a successful debut that received some mixed reviews, but most fans were just happy to see G.I. Joe return. The series spawned a number of new miniseries and one-shots.

Later, Devil's Due ended their partnership with Image and started publishing the series on their own. Writing chores for the series were taken over by Brandon Jerwa. Eventually, after 43 issues and four years, it was decided to again relaunch the comic series and the storyline ended with the Joe team disbanded once again. The next series, G.I. Joe: America's Elite, would pick up where Devil's Due's first series left off.
