CAPTAIN YUSIF. An military officer in the middle eastern nation of Trucial Abysmia. Yusif was the commander of a small unit of soldiers and often clashed with the political officer assigned to his unit, Aman. The new Marxist government of the nation used political officers to make certain that the military followed the will of the party. Aman's power-hungry overzealousness often angered Yusif, a basically honorable man. The unit captured a small team of Joes: Dusty, Outback and new recruits Lightfoot and Mangler. Aman had Lightfoot beaten and tortured until he revealed the Joes' plans, despite Yusif's attempts to stop him. Aman left the Joes in the desert, ordering Yusif to kill them. Knowing that the execution of the Joes would be wrong, Yusif let them go, leaving them with one canteen of water. He also warned them not to try for their objective, a hidden cache of weapons. The Joes, of course, refused to just give up and destroyed the weapons cache. Aman's inept command allowed the Joes to escape after Mangler sacrificed himself to give the Joes time to get away. Aman told Yusif that "the bureaucrats at headquarters will have our heads over this." Yusif pointed out that since Aman had accepted total responsibility for stopping the Joes, only he would be held responsible for the Joes' escape. Yusif's current status is unknown.
