FIREBAT. A primary feature of Cobra's modular launch base was the advanced Firebat light assault jet, which took off from the base's central launch silo vertically, like a rocket. It was extremely maneuverable and could reach a maximum speed of 470 miles per hour. The Firebat included 2 twin 7.62mm variable rate-of-fire minigun with 2,000 rounds, and could carry four 100 pound demolition-type aerial mines and two 500-pound high-drag laser-guided demolition bombs. Firebats were piloted by specially-trained Air Vipers known as A.V.A.C.s, but some could be piloted remotely. The G.I. Joe team first encountered a Firebat during a recon mission to Cobra Island where the very first Terror Drome had been built. Crimson Guardsman Professor Appel set the Island's Firebat to automatically fly an unconscious Ripcord to Springfield, in the hopes the Joe would find his daughter and Ripcord's girlfriend, Candy. Firebats were a standard feature in the Terror Dromes that were sold to various countries around the world, including Sierra Gordo, Frusenland and Benzheen.
