CITADEL. A facility on Cobra Island that was also known as Cobra Headquarters. The building's outer structure was made from reinforced concrete and is trapezoidal in design, with three main towers. Sitting atop the middle tower was a large Cobra sigil. Like a military bunker, the Citadel had very few windows. It was located near the center of Cobra Island, just West of the Island's volcano and North of the airfield. The building housed Cobra Island's communications center, a sophisticated computer system and a laboratory used by Dr. Mindbender, as well as quarters and dining facilities for Cobra's high command.
The Citadel served as the headquarters for Cobra Commander's forces during the Cobra civil war between the Commander and Serpentor. The G.I. Joe team's stealth fighter destroyed the radar emplacements atop one of the Citadel's towers during that conflict, and the building was nearly overrun by Serpentor's forces and their Joe team allies. After Cobra abandoned the island, a small team of Joes landed there and stormed the Citadel, finding Firefly and his brainwashed red ninjas. After a battle in the all but empty building, Firefly was betrayed by his own men. The Citadel was completely abandoned soon after. Years later, the United Nations annexed Cobra Island. The current status of the Citadel is unknown.
