DEFIANT. The
advanced space shuttle used by the G.I. Joe team. The Defiant
not
only had the most advanced computer systems, but was armed -- unlike
NASA's
shuttles -- with a pair of laser cannons. The Defiant and its
mobile
crawler gantry was usually kept at the Pit in Utah. The crawler vehicle
allowed for the shuttle's temporary launch pad to move back underground
to stay hidden once a shuttle mission was launched. During the launch,
the shuttle used -- instead of booster rockets -- a separate vehicle
that
could return to earth. The Joe known as Payload was the commander of
the Defiant, while
Hard Top controlled the crawler. The Defiant was first used by
the
Joes in response to Cobra's attack on a U.S. spy satellite with their
own
shuttle. Hawk himself led the mission, which succeeded only in rescuing
an astronaut stranded in space. Cobra managed to destroy a number of
spy
satellites, which allowed the purpose of their Terror-Drome project to
go undetected. A short time later, Cobra's Star-Viper infiltrated the
Pit
and stole a top secret "black box" from the Defiant, which
could
access encrypted data from U.S. satellites. The government would
eventually
make a deal to get the device back from Serpentor by entering the Cobra
Island civil war on the Cobra emperor's side. The Defiant
played
a key role in the Joe team's biggest operation yet, the Battle of
Benzheen.
When a group of Joes were ambushed in the desert nation of Trucial
Abysmia,
the Defiant deployed an armored vehicle from orbit in order to
rescue
the survivors.
Shortly before the shutdown if the Joe team in 1994, the Defiant
and its crew particiapted in a joint mission between the G.I. Joe team
and former members of the Soviets' October Guard. The Americans and
Russians
teamed up to stop an asteroid from colliding with the Earth. Afer the
Joe
team was disbanded, the Defiant was reassigned, though its
missions
since then are unknown. (GI 65, 67, 72, 109, 110, 130,

D.E.M.O.N.
A heavily-armed battle tank used by Destro's Iron Grenadier army. The
D.E.M.O.N.
-- Dual Elevating Multi-Ordnance Neutralizer
-- has a unique design that is wider than it is long, allowing it to
fire
a large number of weapons at a given target. A D.E.M.O.N is typically
armed
with a triple lense laser, an "Infinity III" laser cannon, and six
"Tri-Cap"
(triple computer-assisted anti-aircraft/anti-personnel) missiles. The
vehicle
also includes advanced imaging and targeting equipment, and has the
ability
to raise itself off of its treads to allow access to targets at a
higher
elevation. D.E.M.O.N.s are usually driven by specially-trained
"Ferrets". The vehicles first saw action during Destro's involvement in
the Cobra Island civil war, in which one of them served as Destro's
command vehicle before it collided with the Dreadnok Thunder Machine.
The
Iron
Grenadiers were seen using D.E.M.O.N.s as recently as 2002, during a
Cobra
assault on Washington, DC. (GI 74-77, 92, 101-103, 105, 116, 117

DESERT
FOX. A six-wheeled armored jeep used by the G.I. Joe team.
Primarily
driven by the Joe known as Skidmark, the Desert Fox was armed with two
ground-to-air missiles and a 70mm anti-aircraft gun. The Desert Fox
first
saw action only hours after its arrival at the Pit, joining in the
chase
after Cobra's Star-Viper, who had infiltrated Joe headquarters and
escaped.
The Fox was part of many other missions for the team, including a long
mission in the jungles of Sierra Gordo where the Joes and the October
Guard
fought Destro's Iron Grenadiers. (GI

DESPOILER. A
small, one-man VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft used by
Destro
as his personal craft. The Despoiler was a short-range hoverjet that
Destro
primarily used to patrol his land in Scotland. The vehicle -- designed
and built by Destro's company, MARS -- was armed with two "Deluge I"
mini-missiles
of Destro's own design, and twin "Rabid" rapid burst 20mm cannons. The
Despoiler was one of the first vehicles of the Iron Grenadier
army.
It was first spotted in Scotland when Cobra staged an assault on Castle
Destro. (GI 87, 116) |
DETONATOR. An
armored anti-aircraft vehicle used by Cobra that could carry three,
large
surface-to-air rockets, and was armed with two mounted machine guns.
The
vehicles were primarily driven by Cobra's Nitro-Vipers. Cobra Commander
used a number of Detonators during his invasion of Borovia. (GI

DEVILFISH. The
G.I. Joe team's riverine warfare and patrol boat, the Devilfish is a
small
but heavily armed attack boat. The boat needs only a one man crew, and
is armed with twin .50 caliber chain guns, four anti-armor Sea Phoenix
missiles and two wire-guided MK 78 Captor torpedoes. The Devilfish was
first used by the Joes when two of the vessels were used to rescue
Snake-Eyes
from Cobra Island. (GI 47; OB 4) |

DRAGONFLY. Heavily-armed
assault helicopters used by the G.I. Joe team. The Dragonfly XH-1
served
the Joe team for many years, primarily while being piloted by Wild
Bill.
The copter carried a two-man crew, and was armed with a varying payload
of Sidewinder missles, anti-tank rockets, and powerful machine guns.
Aside
from combat missions, the Dragonfly served as a rescue copter and
occasionally
ferried Hawk back and forth between Joe headquarters and the Pentagon.
The copters participated in some of the Joes' biggest operations,
including
the Battle of Springfield. (GI 16-19, 22, 25, 27-30,

DREADNOK
CYCLE. A large three-wheeled motorcycle used by the
Dreadnoks.
The cycle was greatly modified by the mercenaries to include a rotating
gun seat with a mounted recoilless rifle, and also carried two
laser-guided
anti-armor missiles. The G.I. Joe team first encountered the Dreadnok
Cycle
during a battle with a group of Dreadnoks on the Jersey shore. (GI
