| JANE. A modified freighter once
used by G.I. Joe as a base for naval operations. The Jane resembled a typical freighter,
but featured a number of modifications including a deck gatling gun and
a cargo area that could carry smaller ships such as the Whale
hovercraft. The smaller craft could be deployed from the opening bay
doors at the front of the freighter. The ship's deck had room for a
helicopter to land. The freighter's crew was usually under the command
of Cutter and included Deep Six. The Jane's many operations included
serving as a base for the Joe team's attack on Cobra forces in the
Florida Everglades. On a later mission, the Jane launched a hovercraft
to scout out Cobra's base on a small atoll on the South Atlantic. After
dropping off the hovercraft, the freighter had to contend with rough
seas, but the situation worsened when the ship came under attack from
Cobra Rattler jets. Cutter, Deep Six, Tripwire and Doc fought back with
the gatling gun but the crashing waves eventually washed out the gun's
control system. The ship took heavy damage from the Rattlers and caught
fire before Deep Six unpacked a Mobile Missile System launcher and
helped take down the Rattlers. The gatling gun was repaired in time to
destroy the final Rattler, but the damage to the Jane was too great.
The burning freighter Jane
sunk beneath the waves and was lost, though the crew escaped in a life
raft and were later rescued by the U.S.S. Flagg aircraft carrier. (GI

| JET
PACK (COBRA). A small jet-powered aircraft used by Cobra
that was flown similarly to a hang glider. The jet pack was armed with
four top-mounted "Quad blast" 25mm axial firing machine guns. It also
carried two "Neutralizer" AIM-44 air-to-air missiles. The engagements
the jet packs were involved in included Cobra's assault on Castle
Destro in Scotland, and a battle is Sierra Gordo involving combined
Cobra and Iron Grenadier forces. (GI

| J.U.M.P. JET PACK. The
G.I. Joe team's Jet Mobile Propulsion Unit was a jet pack used on some
of the team's earliest missions. The JUMP came equipped with a laser
blaster that was built into the handheld control unit. The jet pack was
worn on the pilot's back, held enough fuel for two hours, and could
attain a maximum speed of 150 miles per hour. The unit was mostly used
for reconnaissance but could also be used for a quick surprise strike
on enemy targets. The JUMP was usually flown by qualified expert Grand
Slam, but was also a favorite of Stalker's. Stalker used the JUMP to
scout out Cobra forces on the beach of the Caribbean island where Dr.
Adele Burkhart was held, and also to get an aerial view of a Cobra
bunker while the Joes were teamed up with the October Guard. (GI 1, 7, 8) |
